Hi Voornaam

This issue takes an in-depth look at what's happening - or in some cases not happening - with 5G rollouts and policies in various countries around the world.

To start the ball rolling, we look at the US and the obsession it has had with China in the telecommunications trade war since 2016 when you-know-who came into office. We pose the question what does it mean to win the the 5G race? And we look at what that possibly means from a US perspective.

Meanwhile, US telecoms regulator the Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau has denied a petition from China's second largest telecommunications equipment provider ZTE to remove its designation as a national security threat.

The UK government has declared war on Huawei, with moves to bring forward an all out ban on the Chinese telecoms supplier, plans to fine telcos who use Huawei products, and pledging US$333 million to subsidise operators replacing Huawei gear

While a debate rages on in the world's second most populous country about the urgency or not of rolling out 5G, two global tech giants are betting big on a booming Indian 5G future.  And while India continues to struggle with the when, why and how of implementing 5G technology, in the absence of cordial relations with neighbouring China thanks to recent border clashes, the sub-continent has forged a relationship with Japan to help with developing a 5G strategy.

One country who doesn't appear to feel much in the way of urgency about rolling out 5G surprise surprise surprise is Russia! Authorities have signalled that they are prepared to delay the Russia 5G rollout by five years or longer after a decree was made in the country last week to use only domestic networking equipment in the implementation of 5G wireless networks.

Swedish telecoms equipment supplier Ericsson has partnered with Taiwanese telco Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) to build Asia's first 5G-ready network for Danish power company Ørsted’s Greater Changhua 1 & 2a Offshore Wind Farms. The project has been described as a new milestone in private networks for Taiwanese enterprises.

As always, there is a plethora of more information in the list of stories below and a couple of orders of magnitude more on wirefreez.com!

What does it mean for the US 'to win' the 5G race?
