Hi Voornaam

Australia's government-owned national broadband network provider NBN Co should consider becoming a 5G wholesaler to telecoms RSPs rather than just wholesaling wireline bandwidth, according to a new report.

Two US and two Australian cities are among 36 cities in 22 countries, across 6 continents selected by the World Economic Forum to develop a global smart cities roadmap.

The technology president of US mobile operator T-Mobile, Neville Ray, has dug the knife into rivals Verizon and AT&T over the 5G coverage of their networks, rubbishing the limited reach of Verizon's mmWave network, and labelling AT&T's 5G E network as "misleading" and "not real 5G".

Most readers know that 5G speeds are dependent on the spectrum used, with mmWave providing by far the fastest bit rates. But what is the reality?

A group of academics and ex-officials who are close to the Biden camp have suggested that the US co-operate with China rather than confront Beijing in many fields and also give Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei Technologies a role in the global build of 5G networks. Could this be a harbinger of a serious u-turn in US policy under a Biden administration?

Fixed Mobile Convergence, the Access Gateway Function, and customer premises equipment, have been promoted by communications industry organisation Broadband Forum as three landmark specifications to help operators unlock the full potential of 5G using open and cloud native standards.

There are plenty more stories in today's edition and of course an order of magnitude more on wirefreez.com.
