New data shines a light on problems and possibilities

What a year it has been.

I’d always prefer to start an end-of-year message on a positive note but it’s impossible to ignore that, as I write this, several of our major hospital emergency departments are overwhelmed once again. 

So, I start with recognition of the situation in our healthcare system, especially in our member hospitals, and of all the people affected.

‘In the same room, on the same page’: Our consumers’ take on the 2022 COSA ASM

The theme of this year’s COSA Annual Scientific Meeting – Equitable cancer care for all – offered a rare and unfiltered view into the raft of inequities still experienced by so many people.

Attending the conference on behalf of the VCCC Alliance was Jo Cockwill, our Deputy Chair of the Cancer Consumer Advisory Committee (CCAC), and Wamba Wamba woman Melissa Sheldon, Consumer Representative on our Health Equity Steering Group.

Third major regional site signs new partnership agreement

The VCCC Alliance is delighted to announce Grampians Health as a Regional Program Partner for the remainder of the Strategic Program Plan 2021-24 (SPP).

The newly formed health service – which stretches from Ballarat to Horsham and beyond – joins Albury/Wodonga Health and Bendigo Health as the third regional site to sign on as a program partner representing a significant boost for the reach of the VCCC Alliance.

Implementing national models utilising telehealth: the Victorian Teletrial Collaborative

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the uptake of telehealth throughout the health system, including the conduct of clinical trials.

This paper written by members of VCCC Alliance, Regional Trial Network and TrialHub Alfred Health identifies the key components that need to be addressed for teletrial uptake and implementation in Victoria.

More cancer but better survival

The Victorian Cancer Registry released its report Cancer in Victoria 2021 this morning. This invaluable report shines a light on some real positives in cancer care including a five year survival rate of over 70% for the first time, but also predicts a huge uptick in cancer incidence over the next 15 years. Essential reading for anyone working in cancer research and care.

Picchi Award winners honoured at ceremony

Irene Deftereos, Asha Bonney and Wenxin Hu were presented with their awards for excellence in cancer research at a ceremony at the VCCC building on November 21 and attended by Prof McArthur and representatives of the Picchi Brothers Foundation.

The winning three researchers presented their findings to the audience at the ceremony, which was also broadcast online.

Dr Ashley Ng

Congratulations to WEHI researcher and clinician Dr Ashley Ng, who has been named a winner of the 2022 Metcalf Prize for Stem Cell Research, in recognition of his pioneering work with stem cells to fight blood cancers.


Professor Andrew Roberts

Congratulations to VCCC Alliance Board Director Professor Andrew Roberts AM, who has been elected as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.


Professor Sherene Loi

Congratulations to Professor Sherene Loi of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, who was last month presented with the 2021 Life Scientist of the Year award in Canberra.


Professor Mark Dawson

Congratulations to Professor Mark Dawson of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, who has been elected as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and was last month presented with the 2020 Life Scientist of the Year award.


Associate Professor Misty Jenkins

Congratulations to Associate Professor Misty Jenkins from WEHI - Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research who has been named a CIB on a Medical Research Future Fund grant that will work to advance the benefits from genomic medicine for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
