| | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE New government, new opportunity |
It’s impossible to acknowledge the recent federal election result without also recognising the huge opportunity that comes with a new government, new leaders, and new members of our national parliament. A new government brings an injection of fresh perspectives on the hill in Canberra and a new opportunity to influence the key policies and directions nationally for cancer.
I am especially encouraged by the swathe of first-time MPs from medical and scientific backgrounds who have been sworn into our federal parliament. There is clearly an opportunity to have health on the political agenda despite the desire from many quarters to have the pandemic behind us. With the draft of the National Cancer Plan due for distribution at the end of this year, we look to play our part to ensure it delivers for all Australians affected by cancer, now and in the future.
On an exciting and positive note, the momentum of our ambitious alliance is really gaining traction. Over the past month our work has been acknowledged in several national and international awards, spanning multiple aspects of our organisation – research, education and clinical trials.

| Teletrials right on target When it comes to cancer care, all things are not equal. That’s especially true for people living in rural and regional areas, where issues such as access and resources affect a range of factors including quality of life and cancer survival rates.
In 2018, the VCCC Alliance, supported by funding from the Victorian Government, led an innovative program to enable broader access to cancer clinical trials across regional areas, unimpeded by geographical location and local healthcare architecture. Four years down the track, this has been a game-changer.

| Hope is not a plan: Implementation Science turning potential into reality In the complex world of health care, even a highly promising new treatment or potentially transformational protocol can be stymied by a range of systemic issues, capability limitations and other challenges that slow or stop them reaching their full potential in practice.
Implementation science brings proven theories, models and frameworks to the table to scaffold and support new ideas and help make them a reality.

| Managing the shortage of contrast dye for patients with cancer The global shortage of iodinated contrast media (contrast) diagnostic agents is impacting some health screening and surgical procedures, including some cancer assessments.
Guidance and information for health care professionals, plus a plain language Q&A for patients and carers, can be found on our Victorian COVID-19 Cancer Network news page. |

| Consumer Survey: Clinical trial matching websites Clinical trials play a vital role in continually improving treatments and care but a key barrier to trial participation persists: patients are simply not aware of appropriate trials.
Some patients will search for trials themselves, with 'matching' websites offering a service to find or match clinical trials to the patient.
We are collecting consumer feedback on these clinical trial matching websites to inform an important awareness project as part of our Clinical Trial Innovations program. |

| Explainer: What are registry trials and teletrials? Over time, clinical trials have become increasingly complex, creating a barrier to both participants and those conducting trials. Travel distance, narrow eligibility criteria and technical/logistical gaps can lead to a disparity in representation and access, especially in rural and regional areas.
The emerging trial methodologies of registry trials and teletrials challenge these barriers. |
