Healthcare organizations know that workplace violence happens all the time, but are you doing enough to prevent it? It’s not only your emergency department that’s vulnerable. Recent years have been filled with incidents of violence towards patients, healthcare providers, and other staff across all hospital and healthcare settings.

In fact, according to OSHA, 27 out of 100 fatalities in healthcare settings in 2013 were due to acts of workplace violence. And from 2002 to 2013, incidents of serious workplace violence were four times more common in healthcare settings than in private industry.

It’s time to think more deeply about the employee training and education around workplace violence risk factors and scenarios that your organization offers and go beyond the basics to tackle the problem. You must stay up-to-date on new approaches to prevent and mitigate violent incidents. While there is no specific regulation that governs workplace violence under OSHA, federal and state enforcement agencies have stepped up their involvement in workplace violence incidents, often relying on OSHA’s General Duty Clause to hold employers accountable. In addition, The Joint Commission released a Sentinel Event Alert in April 2018 that highlighted the problem of workplace violence in healthcare and recommended actions for facilities to take to address the issue. Also, the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety Foundation released a new Threat Management guideline last March that encourages facilities to form a multidisciplinary threat management team to identify threats and determine their seriousness and severity.

Hospitals and healthcare organizations are extremely vulnerable to workplace violence risks and there are steps you can take to keep yourself, your coworkers, and your patients safe. So take a proactive step to solidify your prevention and response plan at this can’t-miss training.
