“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” 🎶

You've heard the line a million times, but have you ever tried a freshly roasted chestnut? According to allrecipes.com, they are buttery and soft with flavors similar to a cooked sweet potato.

While attending the 35th annual Victorian Sleighbell Parade & Old Christmas Weekend in Manistee, MLive travel and trending reporter Justine Lofton decided to taste the traditional treat herself.

So, what did she think? Well, you'll have to watch the video and see her live reaction to find out.

Voters may get a chance to expand Michigan’s bottle deposit law

Senate Bill 1112 and Senate Bill 1113: Michigan voters are a step closer to a chance to expand the bottle deposit law to include water bottles and other beverage containers. Voters may even be able to force retailers to accept all containers with a deposit, whether purchased there or not. These proposed changes are included in a pair of bills that may be considered by the Michigan Senate Committee of the Whole as early as this week.

Bills to beef up school safety: Measures intensifying emergency response requirements and prevention of threats of violence in Michigan schools could be headed for final approval three years after the Oxford shooting that inspired one of them. The state House education committee passed the five-bill package on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Locally: The Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority signed off on a 25-year, no-bid contract for concert giant Live Nation to provide promotional and booking services at Acrisure Amphitheater.

University of Michigan regent’s home vandalized with mason jars, pro-Palestine slogan

Sunday night: The home of a Jewish member of the University of Michigan Board of Regents was attacked, including spray-painted pro-Palestinian messages on his family car. Regent Jordan Acker, also a Southfield-based attorney, confirmed his Huntington Woods home was targeted overnight on Dec. 8. Someone threw two mason jars filled with urine through one of his home’s windows, as well as spray-painted the slogan “Divest and Free Palestine” on his car, he told MLive/The Ann Arbor News.

Expanding: The University of Michigan closed Monday on a $9.5-million purchase of land next to the MGM Grand Detroit, officials said.

More in education: The Robinson Bay, a historic tugboat built in 1958, has entered Lake Ontario on its journey from the GLS Marine Base in Massena, N.Y. to Cleveland, and eventually the Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City. Once in Traverse City, the vessel will serve as a training platform for the academy’s maritime students.

Winter Storm Watch issued for 24 Michigan counties, up to foot of snow expected

Be aware: A classic and strong lake-effect snow set-up should make a large area of heavy snow. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch more than 24 hours before the start of the snowy period. The winter storm watch is in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 7 p.m. Thursday.

In Lower Michigan the winter storm watch stretches from the Kalamazoo area northward through the Grand Rapids area and up the western shoreline through Muskegon, Grand Traverse area and Charlevoix. Cadillac is also in the winter storm watch. The western Lake Superior shoreline counties in the Upper Peninsula are also in the winter storm watch.

On the water: Around 2,000 feet of twinkling lights decorate the S.S. City of Milwaukee during the 2024 holiday season, transforming it into Manistee's Christmas Ship. Anyone who drives north on U.S. 31 through Manistee into Manistee Township after dark through December will have a great view of the lit-up ship, including a homemade star.

Dan Campbell offers update on injured Lions players, including Aidan Hutchinson

The Detroit Lions (12-1) are coming out of their mini-bye weekend feeling more positive about a handful of injuries. Dan Campbell is feeling better about left tackle Taylor Decker and four of the team’s top defensive linemen. Campbell was also asked about the status of star edge defender Aidan Hutchinson. The head coach said his thinking hasn’t changed since Hutchinson suffered the broken tibia and fibula back in Week 5.

All eyes on us: The Lions’ Thursday night win over the Packers attracted an average of 17.29 million viewers to set a new NFL regular-season streaming record, according to Pro Football Talk. On Sunday, the Lions and Bills will have plenty to play for – notably a first-round bye – and their matchup at Ford Field is expected to be accordingly close.

Central Michigan has found its next football coach. Army assistant coach Matt Drinkall has been named the 30th head coach in program history, Director of Athletics Amy Folan announced on Monday.

‘No lights’ hike: In celebration of the Winter Solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will have a park ranger guiding hikers through the park without any lights.
