South Africa have their Lifeline

South Africa’s hopes of making the 2014 World Cup next summer were thrown a major lifeline on Monday after FIFA docked CAF qualifying Group A leaders, Ethiopia, three points for fielding an illegible player.

The ruling concerned midfielder, Minyahil Teshome Beyene – who played for Ethiopia during their 2-1 victory over Botswana in June despite being suspended for the tie. No one in the Ethiopian set-up realised Beyene had collected too many yellow cards and should have missed the game, meaning the Black Lions were served a 3-0 retrospective defeat.

Leeds Promise to Help Somma

South Africa striker, Davide Somma, will continue his rehabilitation from injury at English Championship side, Leeds United, but the 28-year old has been told it is unlikely he will be offered a new contract at Elland Road.

The Bafana Bafana forward has spent much of the past two years sidelined with a knee injury, but Somma did manage to score on his brief return to action for Leeds last season.

A relatively minor setback cut short Johannesburg-born Somma’s season, however, soon followed by the expiration of his contract at the English club.
