Pressure from student organizations, faculty and campus leadership led University of Maryland President Wallace Loh to fire head football coach DJ Durkin on Wednesday, one day after Durkin's reinstatement by the board of regents. The employment-cost index rose 0.8% in the third quarter, with the index unchanged from last year at 2.8%, a 10-year high, according to the Labor Department. Private-sector wages and salaries rose 3.1% in the 12 months ending in September, topping 3% for the first time in a decade.
