View in browser SEPTEMBER 3, 2019 Walmart said Tuesday that it would discontinue the sale of ammunition used in high-capacity magazines and military-style weapons. It also asked its customers not to openly carry firearms in stores even in states where it is permitted.
The news follows mass shootings across the U.S., including one that killed 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.
The retail giant said it will stop selling short-barrel rifle ammunition, such as the .223 and 5.56 caliber, which can be used in high-capacity magazines and military-style weapons, CEO Doug McMillon said in a memo.
Thomas Marshall, who with other Walmart employees, started a Change.Org petition to pressure their employer about guns, joined The Beat with Ari Melber Tuesday.
“We are incredibly grateful and impressed at the direction that Walmart is going. We were hopeful, but this [gun reform] is something difficult to change in this country. We hope it sets a paradigm and a precedent, really, to help curb this horrible trend of mass shootings,” he said.
“Well, we’re in a discussion about what to do on the gun issue in the wake of these horrendous shootings… I said several weeks ago that if the president took a position on a bill so that we knew we would actually be making a law and not just having serial votes, I'd be happy to put it on the floor.”
"Over the last five, six, or seven years, no matter how strong you make your background checks, it wouldn’t have stopped any of it," he claimed.
“It’s reaching a surreal level where it keeps happening,” said MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace of the mass shootings. “And we keep posing the same questions... Other than Beto O’Rourke dropping the f-bomb… I’m not sure anyone in public life is matching and saying what most people feel, which is hunted.”
