Gov. Tim Walz wants Minnesotans to get one-time payments of $500 for individuals and $1,000 for couples. 

It's part of the revised supplemental budget the governor released today, aimed at addressing the more than $9 billion of state surplus economic officials expect in coming months. 

Walz said it would be  a good time to approve the rebate checks he proposed as part of the plan. The suggested amounts for the checks are more than double what he previously recommended.

South Minneapolis street now honors a pioneer Black firefighter
