BOARD BUZZ

Recapitation Update

The Board have been continuing to work on the question of recapitation. We have been speaking with MAC as well as other schools to ensure there is a broader sense of the issue. The spatial plan which QLDC have recently undertaken is seen by the Ministry as being an important part of the information for how the education network should be designed in the Upper Clutha. With this now released in its draft form we will be looking to them to update the growth plan for our area and we will be ensuring recapitation is a part of that discussion.

We are also looking at engaging more next term to provide parents with more information about the current thinking on the issue as a large number of you responded to the survey saying you would like to know more about it. As always, if you have any questions please contact me on boardchair@wanaka.school.nz.
CURRICULUM COMMENT

Cook Book...Count Down Is On

I have just seen the most tantalising breakfast dish flash past…french toast, yum...and blueberries...even yummier. I can't wait to see all of these amazing recipes together in one book.  Keep sending in those luscious recipes...3 days to go!

We are nearly at the second stage of compiling our new cook book, BITE: Mountain Munches, Lakeside Lunches and everything in between, as we will be sorting and selecting which recipes to use, and starting to plan the layout.  The sponsorship to assist with the publishing of our book is well underway.  We have a great team of parents working on the driving of this fundraiser.  We need your recipes by Friday please, so email them in (wendyb@wanaka.school.nz) or drop them off in the box in Reception.  Hopefully we will have a few healthy recipes submitted by those children with pop-up cafes in Pod 8 as well.

Festival Of Colour

Festival of Colour activities are on again this week.  The ballet workshop last week was amazing and to see so many children gracefully leaping into the air and landing in a ballet 'dance' was heart-warming.  This week we have more children taking part in the ballet workshops and on Thursday the whole school will be entertained by the ACE Brass Band.  Thanks to our Festival of Colour organiser Jo, for helping us access these great opportunities.

Next Term...Things to Know

  • A reminder that school finishes for the term this Friday (16th April) and term 2 starts on Monday 3rd May.

  • Friday 7th May our PTA have the Mothers' Day Movie Night.
  • Week 1 of next term sees the first sessions of Seasons for Growth for 3 groups of children.  Mandy Greer from REAP will work with our Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6 groups with our very own Hannah, who trained in this last year, will be working with our Year 1 & 2 group.
  • Tuesday 11th May is the Upper Clutha Rippa Rugby competition.
  • Wednesday 12th May is our monthly PTA meeting.
  • Saturday 15th May is the PTA Ski Sale and Car Boot Sale.
  • TEACHER ONLY DAY is on Monday 17th May.  School is closed for the day.  Other Central Otago teachers and EC teachers will be gathering in our school hall to hear Nathan Wallis talk about trauma, anxiety and stress in children.  Nathan will be presenting to parents on Monday night on the same topic.  A gold coin donation at the door please.
  • On Tuesday evening at 7pm Nathan will be talking about teens and the brain. This will be happening in Cromwell at the Cromwell College Auditorium. Entry once again a gold coin donation.
  • Friday 21st May - is Pink Shirt Day.  We invite all children to wear a pink shirt to symbolise our no bullying policy and bring a gold coin donation which will go towards the Mental Health Foundation fund.
I wish everyone a great two week holiday.  This term has been packed with 'activities' and with it being an 11 week term, children and teachers are tired and need a recharge.  I am off to Palmerston North to have more Granny time...and she has grown so much since I last saw her in the flesh.  I have a number of videos and photos each day to remind me how gorgeous and happy she is.  Such a smiley wee girl.

SCHOOL NOTICES

Grandparents in School

We are seeking Grandparent volunteers to assist children in Pod 1 and 3 in developing a range of reciprocal skills. Volunteers spend 1:1 time with a child in the school library or classroom with the support of the child's teacher. They undertake a variety of fun activities such as reading support, playing cards, games, storytelling or art enabling children to develop trusting reciprocal and responsive relationships with their ‘Grandparent volunteer’. The relationship is built on trust and respect and the time commitment is usually one hour per week during term 2 and 3. Time is negotiated with each Grandparent volunteer.  If you would like to help please contact Jason at jasonc@wanaka.school.nz or phone the office on 443 7687.

There will be a meeting for all interested on Tuesday 4th May at 11am in the staffroom at WPS.

HEALTH SNIPPETS

Head Lice

Head lice are an (unwelcome) part of life, and are easily spread between people, particularly children. The key to managing head lice is early detection: look through your child’s hair on a regular basis – nominate a certain night of the week so it becomes routine.

Use your fingers or a head lice comb, and look for little brown insects on the scalp. The eggs are almost invisible before they hatch, so by the time you spot the little white eggs on the hair shaft they are already hatched.

Do not treat your child unless you see live lice.

The best treatment is thorough combing with a head lice comb and lots of conditioner in the hair. This should be done every 2nd day for 10 days.
If you choose to use a head lice shampoo, you should still do the wet combing as described above. Shampoos do not kill eggs, and do not always kill all the live lice.

Do not use animal products on your child’s scalp. They are harmful to humans.

The second half of the concert showcases performers from Living Options, people who have disabilities who have gained confidence through music.
