IMPORTANT NOTICES

Lost Trainers

A pair of size 3 Salomon trainers (black/blue) were lost down at Challenge last Friday.  If you picked them up can you please drop them into the office so they can be returned to their owner.  Many thanks.

School Band Practice

A reminder for all children interested in being in the Band (Year 5 & 6 and possibly year 4s) to bring their instruments tomorrow.  Band practice is every Wednesday afternoon.

Puzzling World Junior Challenge

Congratulations to all students who raced their hearts out at the Wānaka Primary School Triathlon which was held in conjunction with the Puzzling World Junior Challenge last Friday.  To see the smiles, participation and competition made us all proud.  Thank you to all parents for handling the logistics of bike drop off and pick up, but the effort was worth it to see the smiles at the finish line.  A wonderful event capped off on Saturday with Braden Currie winning the elite men's race.  Well done to everyone and thank you to all volunteers and Challenge Wānaka.

Welcome Back to School Picnic

Thursday 20th February 5-7pm

Our welcome back to school picnic is great way to start off the year.  We invite all parents and students to come along dressed in tribe colours to enjoy some activities and a picnic.  Activities will be planned as follows:
  • 5.00pm:  The staff and Kapahaka group will welcome everyone with a powhiri. Families are asked to gather by the hall where you will be met and led into the school.
  • 5.15pm:  Families will be invited to set up an area for a BYO picnic tea, or take-aways, whichever suits best.
  • 5.30pm:  JUMP OFF - we will have students in year levels show off the Jump Jam routines they have been working on.  Families can eat their picnics whilst these are being performed.
  • 6.00pm:  Families will then be invited to join us for some games and activities such as t-ball, softball, parachute activities, fitness trail, playgrounds, etc.  It will be fun.
  • Parents can also visit pods and meet the teachers and have a look around the rooms.
As the weather forecast is not looking great for Thursday 5-7pm - at 1pm we will make the call whether to postpone - we will let you know via our app, website and email.

Next Week is Pod 8 Swim Week

Rooms 30, 31, 32 and 33 - Room 29 will swim in week 6 with Pod 7
Our minibuses are currently being sign written but will be ready for us to use to get classes to swimming next week.  Whilst we are working out a system for drivers of the minibuses, I thank the leadership team, office team and John who have all volunteered to go on a driver roster.

Student Leadership Groups

Student Leadership groups are currently being organised and 'trained'. The library leaders are starting their training with librarian Melissa and today the PALS (Physical Activity Leaders) are having a training session with Sport Central.  Anna from Pod 8 and Hannah from Pod 6 are the lead teachers responsible for the student leadership initiatives and they will keep you informed with what our student leaders are undertaking within the school and community.

NPDL Training

Jennie Croxford, Anne Jenkins, Leeanne Fairbairn and Anna Speak are in Christchurch training to be NPDL (New Pedagogies for Deep Learning) facilitators Monday to Wednesday this week.  This is a very unique opportunity and they are working with teachers from across the country, Australia and Vancouver.

Te Reo and Tikanga PLD

On Friday, Anne Jenkins and Beth Hamilton are undertaking a day's PLD in Te Reo and Tikanga in Alexandra and will then update the rest of the staff.  This professional development is planned for one day each term.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

As we have a number of children who are English language learners, we have employed Clair Winslade as our ESOL teacher.  Clair will support the teachers and teacher aides as they personalise learning for these children and will also work with these children one day a week.

School Activity Fee

2020 Annual School Activity Fee

The annual activity fee is $40.00 per child for 2020.  This is a compulsory fee which covers extra-curricular costs, such as those incurred by bringing visiting performers/specialists to Wānaka, for example, sports coaching, dance/music/drama performances and special events.  Collecting this annual fee avoids the time-consuming exercise of collecting 600 plus entry fees each time there is a performance or activity.  The $40.00 payment is required by Wednesday 26th February 2020.  Please make your payment as soon as possible, as our first performance is on Friday 28th February, with El Gregoe performing a comical performance getting the message across about our values using laughter and magic.  We would appreciate school fees being paid BEFORE this date so all children can benefit from this performance.

Payments can be made by:
Direct credit to Wānaka Primary School - account 02-0673-0023784-001
Eftpos - available at the school office
Cheque - please make payable to Wānaka Primary School
Cash - please ensure you provide your child's name and room number with payment.

School Donations for 2020

This year, the government has introduced a new donations scheme – the initiative will see decile 1 – 7 schools receive their additional funding in January 2020, alongside their regular operational funding, if the Boards agree not to ask parents and caregivers to pay donations.  Unfortunately, as a decile 10 school, Wānaka Primary School does not qualify for this funding and this has increased the reliance on receiving a donation from parents to adequately staff and resource the school, so please consider donating this year.

The suggested school donation is $150.00.  The BOT requests the donation annually to assist with costs (not covered by the MOE operations grant), these include providing specialist teaching tutors (eg. Maori and Music), extra resources and teaching / learning enrichment and extension programmes, as well as employing extra staff to address teacher / student ratios.

Tax deductible receipts are issued for all donations.
