Countdown to the End of Term... We only have 10 days left of term 1. That is crazy. Each day has been packed full of activities and sped passed. What's up for the rest of the term? Cook Book...we need your recipe...asap! We are still seeking recipes. Keep them coming in either by email to cookbook@wanaka.school.nz or post it in the box at reception. We want Granny's family recipe or your child's favorite dish. If you haven't yet submitted a recipe we want yours now!
We will be approaching people who are world famous in Wānaka to send us their recipes. If you know someone who is 'famous' please get a recipe from them. Also as the cook book had its inspiration in Lockdown with all the extra cooking and baking going on, we would love to receive your favourite Lockdown dishes as well.
This week we have a reward (aka bribe) for the class who gives their teacher the MOST recipes by Thursday 3pm. There is great competition amongst the teachers so go for it and support your children and our recipe book. The class with the most recipes gets to choose a reward activity.
We have three amazing mums who are going to photograph our dishes and the cook book team (Abbie Barnes, Emma Williamson, Emma Davidson and myself) want all recipes in by the end of term so we can get into action sorting them and starting to put the different parts of our cook book together.
SO get onto it and get those recipes in...only 11 days until the end of term. Hot X Buns Many thanks to Shona Brown and her PTA support team who provided all of us with scrumptious hot cross buns. Thanks to New World Three Parks for baking these and providing them. Wānaka Trail Ride I don't know about you, but I loved the Trail Ride on Saturday. The weather played its part, the event was fantastically organised by the Trail Ride team and we all had fun. I was looking after the peewee track and wow...I loved watching and hearing the enjoyment, excitement and challenge. The burgers and food were scrummy and there were riders on bikes everywhere. There were 588 riders registered and apart from the enjoyment of the day the Trail Ride has made Montessori and WPS some funds. Ours will go into the purchase of equipment and resources for our soon to be developed Maker Spaces. COPSSA Athletics Kath and Jason headed off with 31 WPS students to the CO Athletics Champs in Alexandra. The weather was kind and our children were eager to do their best. Thanks to the parents who supported children and provided transport. Kath will email out the results. Rippa Rugby Hannah has been busy organising our two Year 6 teams and our two Year 4 teams for the UC Rippa Rugby competition scheduled for Tuesday 11th May. There will be practices at interval and lunchtimes for these teams and Hannah has some MAC students helping to train our teams. Junior Athletics This event is planned for Tuesday 13th April, which is in the last week of this term. Hannah is also leading the organization of this event. Further information will follow. PTA Morning Tea The PTA are inviting existing and new parents to a 'Welcome to Term 2' cuppa and cake to be held in the hall on Monday 3rd May at 9am. Come along and meet parents of new families to the school and connect with existing families as well.
The PTA has a busy schedule for term 2 and 3: - Friday 7th May - Mothers' Day Movie Night
- Saturday 15th May - Ski Sale and Car Boot Sale
- Friday 3rd September - Fathers' Day Breakfast
- Friday 17th September - Friday Night Lights
Mark these dates in your diary and if you can help at any of these contact the PTA by emailing pta@wanaka.school.nz. Nathan Wallis Please note that Wānaka Primary School will be closed for instruction on Monday 17th May as we have a teacher only day featuring the words of wisdom from Nathan Wallis. Please make alternative arrangements for your children on this day. The After School Kids Club will be available on this date if you are looking for supervision of your children.
Nathan will be targeting early childhood years and primary teachers with a focus on coping with change and stress and trauma of younger children and how to provide good learning to support our children through times of change.
Also on Monday 17th May Nathan will present a parents' workshop from 7:30pm to 9:00pm and will focus on what parents of preschooler and primary aged children can do to best support their children. A gold coin donation is asked at the door.
On Tuesday evening Nathan will present to parents of teenagers but this time in Cromwell at Cromwell College. He will be talking about the adolescent brains and what parents can do to best support their offspring. This will be a gold coin donation as entry. During the day Nathan will be presenting to secondary school teachers about the brain development of teens. Term Dates and Easter Break The last day of term 1 is Friday 16th April and the first day of Term 2 is Monday 3rd May.
There will be no newsletter next week with the last edition for term 1 being sent home on Tuesday 13th April. Have an awesome Easter - schools have from Friday 2nd April through to Tuesday 6th April as a holiday break. I hope you have spicy Easter buns and plenty of chocolate and marshmallow eggs to enjoy over Easter. |

Calling All Talented Whanau As part of our school's 'Positive Behaviour for Learning' initiative, we are always looking out for ways we can grow the fun, safe and enriching opportunities students have available to them during their lunch breaks (1:00 - 1:30pm).
Because many students enjoy staying busy with organised activities, we are on the look out for lovely parents or grandparents who would like to volunteer a bit of their time to teach new skills to those who are interested.
For example, you might have a hobby or activity you are skilled in (e.g. drawing, knitting, origami, lego, gardening, dance, construction - the list is endless) and have one free lunch time per week to run a club with interested students. Or you might be a skilled sportsperson who has some free lunchtimes to tutor sports skills and referee some games.
If this sounds like you, please contact Karina (karinas@wanaka.school.nz) with the details of your talent including which day/s you are available. Please note that due to health and safety requirements, most parents working in school will need to be police vetted. The school will organise this. Thanks! |

Good Grief and Seasons for Growth Programmes Central Otago REAP offer a suite of Good Grief and Seasons for Growth Programmes plus a range of information to support local families and professionals.
Seasons for Growth is an innovative grief and loss education programme that uses the imagery of the season to illustrate the experience of grief. It aims to strengthen the social and emotional wellbeing of children and young people (aged 6-18) who are dealing with significant life changes.
Trained adult 'Companions' facilitate the small group programme, where participants support and learn from each other in age appropriate and engaging activities. Our Pod 5 teacher, Hannah Chisholm, is a trained facilitator in Seasons for Growth.
Young people learn that they are not alone in dealing with the effects of change, loss and grief, and build their communication, decision making and problem solving skills within a supportive peer group.
If you think that your child would benefit from the Seasons for Growth programme you can find out more information here or complete an enrolment form by clicking here. The programme is held in a private classroom here at Wānaka Primary and usually runs for 40 minutes in the afternoon between 1.30 - 3.00pm on Thursdays. |

A rip-roaring day out at Wānaka Trail Ride An epic day was had by all at Saturday’s Wānaka Trail Ride. All up, 588 trail riders descended upon Tarras, many travelling from around the South Island to be there. We were absolutely thrilled to see so many riders turn up. And it all went off without a hitch! If you were there, we hope you had an awesome time. And if you weren’t, lock it in for next year! An event like this couldn’t happen without the incredible support of so many volunteers, sponsors, and of course, our generous landowners, Dennis Nyhon, Lucy Annan and Simon Mailing. Thank you! An army of volunteers from our wonderful school community helped out with everything from baking cakes to marshalling to setting the course with our amazing Tracks Manager Phil Pendlebury (who worked for weeks leading up to the event). And a big shout out to Tarras School, who stepped in to run the car parking as their school fundraiser. Teamwork makes the dream work. We must acknowledge our fearless leader, Robyn Miller, who has made this event run like a well-oiled machine for years. Robyn steps down as Chair this year, and in her place, the very capable Alix Wilson steps in. Lucy in the office is working hard to tally up the final amount raised, and once we have the figure, we’ll let you know. Funds raised from this event go to Wānaka Primary School, Montessori Children’s House Wānaka,Tarras Primary School and the RSA Appeal. In the meantime, have a look at the incredible photos taken by (another wonderful volunteer) Tonia Kraakman. See you next year! |
