IMPORTANT NOTICES
We are closing school at 12:45pm this Friday 28th May to allow staff to attend Cosie's funeral (teacher, Marj Cosgrove's husband). Some staff will also be helping with the catering as we want to support Marj and her family.
Please ensure you have collected your children by 1pm - NO SUBWAY ORDERS and NO BUSES will be running from Wānaka Primary School that afternoon.
We have 2 or 3 staff members who will stay at school if there are children who cannot find supervision for the afternoon.
If you require your child to be supervised at school please contact the office no later than 3pm Wednesday 26th May as we can only supervise a certain number under Health & Safety regulations. |

Recapitation Meeting for Parents - June 14th and June 15th The Board are holding 2 information and question sessions on retaining the Year 7s and 8s within the primary school. We are offering the meeting at 2 different times to get as many parents together as we can to look at the positives and any negatives and also interesting ideas around recapitation. Howie our Board Chair will facilitate these consultation meetings.
For those of you who prefer the afternoon, the meeting is 3:15-4:30pm on Monday 14th June. We will provide supervision of children for parents opting for this.
For those who prefer the evening the meeting is 7-8pm on Tuesday 15th June.

Maker Spaces Construction Project - we want your views Maker Spaces are outdoor learning areas we will construct by pods to provide storage and making spaces for children's building projects. This may be construction with wood or metal - drilling, hammering, etc, sewing or using a 3-D printer to design and create a solution to a problem. This is part technology and part Deep Learning where students design solutions to problems or issues they are solving.
We have a basic design that we are working from. The maker spaces need to be built by the end of this year. See plans attached here.
We would appreciate your feedback on the design of these outside learning spaces. We aim to have a lot of storage which can be secured off so there is no security risk or damage of students' learning artefacts over the weekends, etc.
On Thursday this week from 3:15-4.00pm the plans will be on display in Pod 7 (David), Pod 4 (Danielle) and Pod 1 (Charlotte) along with a teacher, listed in brackets, who is able to explain the purpose and design factors of this space along with listening to your feedback and suggestions. For example we have already decided that there is no need for sinks as there is one in the awhina area of each pod. We need shelves and storage areas that can be closed off with a sliding door. We will need mobile building tables etc so these can be stored in pods when not in use, we need outside access to electricity and lighting, as well as some form of heating.
The funds for the construction of these Maker Spaces are provided by the Ministry of Education as part of our innovation funding that comes with our 10 Year Property Plan. The intent is to create outdoor learning spaces and to create more collaborative, hands - on doing type, working spaces by making use of the outdoor areas at each end of the pods. We will have a total of 14 spaces added.
Have a look, talk to either one of the team mentioned above, one of the leadership team or email the office or your child's teacher. We have a short timeline and would like your feedback by the end of the week. Then we will ask our project manager to revise the plan and then we will circulate it again.
Once we have the plan agreed to, our project manager will tender for a builder, with the aim of having these spaces in by the end of the year.
Recladding of Pods 1-6, Admin Block and the Hall Over the last 5 years you will have noticed a deterioration of the Shadowclad our blocks are clad in. It has taken 4 years of negotiations and court proceedings by the Ministry, but now we are awaiting a final sign off so that this huge project of recladding most of the school can proceed. Once we have confirmed a start date I will keep you informed about progress and procedures, as the builders move from pod to pod and this will mean teachers and students will also have to leave their pods to have this work done...such fun! But our beloved school will look beautiful and fresh again.
ERO Review The leadership team had a third meeting with Murray from ERO looking at our school's learning journey over the last 5 years (when we last had ERO). We are yet to finalise our review question but it will be one that follows the school's mission statement in our charter/strategic plan, through to whole school implementation from planning, pedagogy, student progress and achievement and assessment and reporting. We are looking forward to having Murray do a Deep Dive into our school. He told us he is looking forward to undertaking this as well - he has acknowledged that Wānaka Primary School's past ERO evidence has shown that we are a high performing school and we are looking forward to ERO's input into the focus for our strategic plan later this year. |

Pink Shirt Day We had a fabulous Pink Shirt Day on Friday raising a total of $600 for the Mental Health Foundation. The tribe afternoon featured a disco, games focusing on sharing, kindness and caring and there was a blaze of pinks accompanying the sound of happy, engaged students. Thanks to Barry and our junior ambassadors for a great afternoon and reinforcing the message of caring for each other. Thanks also to the parents who dressed in pink for their day at work on Friday.

2021 Snow Sports Programme All information regarding the winter sports programme (skiing and boarding) is on our school website. Please read ALL information carefully. Enrolments for Cardrona and TC are online. Snow Farm forms are available from the school office. Please ensure you keep copies of your receipts etc...for evidence of paying for the school programme.

ESOL Morning Tea Last week Clair (ESOL) and Leah (SENCO) hosted a morning tea for our ESOL children and their families. The ESOL children were proud to show off their English classroom and their projects they have been working on. It was an opportunity for Clair and Leah talk about the ESOL programme and answer any questions that parents had about the programme or their children's learning needs. It was exciting to meet and chat with our ESOL community and we look forward to welcoming them back for our Language and Cultural week in Term 4. |

Otago Gymnastics Championships - Results Ten Wānaka Primary School students competed at the Otago Gymnastic Championships in Dunedin at the weekend. Eddy Forster was a member of the Level 1 MAG (Mens artistic gymnastics) team and competed on pommel, high bar, floor, parallel bars, vault and rings. In their first ever team competition, Eddy along with his teammates, placed 3rd overall in their category, a great achievement for their first team competition. Emmie Wyatt, Hazel Robinson and Penny Swan, competed in their first competition in WAG Step 1. The main goal was to compete with confidence and even though the gymnasium is about 6 times as big as their own the girls had some fab results for their first effort. Keira Lam and Lara Beams were members of the Step 2 WAG team (Womens artistic gymnastics) and performed on vault, bar, beam and floor, against 42 other competitors. Keira earned a personal best score for the day and Lara also scored a personal best and placed 3rd overall in Otago. With their team mates they won the overall Otago title for Step 2 making them the Otago Champions. Honor Jones and Ivy Campbell competed in Step 3. Honor earned a qualifying score and Ivy placed 4th on vault. Lucy Wellington and Vienna Harley competed in Step 4, Both gymnasts earned top 10 scores in vault and floor while Vienna also was top 10 in beam and earned enough points for her 2nd qualification to move to the next step. Lucy is inching closer to qualifying with every competition and is now only .5 away. Congratulations to to you all on your dedication to your sport, fantastic achievements, you should be very proud of yourselves. |

Pod 7 Expo Pod 7 shared their new knowledge about Science on Friday. There were projects on everything from 'What's Inside the Earth' to 'How a Boat Moves'. Everyone who went learned some really cool facts about Science!!!

Pink Shirt Day On the 21st of May 2021, there was a Pink Shirt Day. The Junior Ambassadors held a few activities such as discos, games, kindness messages, and much, much more. Everyone had so much fun doing all the activities. There was no bullying in the school and it was a fun and great experience for all the students in the school.
