Dress Up and Baking at the Skifields This Thursday

This Thursday is the last EOTC/Ski Programme day, so to celebrate skiers are encouraged to dress up in their favourite outfit and head out on the slopes.  Also as an appreciation to the skifield staff and instructors please whip up some home baking and drop off to our staff when you sign in.  They will ensure it is passed on to the workers. 
 

Daffodils for Sale

The Enviro Group were hard at work in May planting 500 daffodil bulbs kindly donated by Mitre 10.  The bulbs have now sprung and are ready for sale with all proceeds going to the Cancer Society.
$5 will purchase you a bunch of 10 daffodils - call by the office

EOTC Outdoor Pursuits at Hook

The EOTC Outdoor Pursuits group had a fantastic first-class fishing experience at Hook. They were able to enjoy every step of the process, from lake to plate! 

 

Friday's Fun Run

A fabulous day was had by our tamariki last Friday! The children came to school ready to run their hearts out and they did! Everyone had a great time and the sausage sizzle was an added bonus. Thank you for all your support around this. Sponsor money has already been coming in - please do keep it coming.
Thanks also goes out to Mitre 10 for the use of their BBQ and Four Square
who donated some sausages for the Sausage Sizzle.
BOARD BUZZ

Our New House Build for Teachers

With the Health and Safety documents all signed off, the School Board met with the GJ Gardner team on site this week to celebrate the start of the new school house build, as a modern four bedroom home will begin work in the coming weeks. Recruiting and keeping great teachers is paramount for Wanaka Primary School, however living in our beautiful town often comes with expensive housing. The new school house will offer a modern, warm and inviting home that will enable some of our teachers a more affordable stepping stone into a home here in Wanaka. Lookout for progress photos as the build takes place.

CURRICULUM COMMENT

Schooling 2020

We are seeking information from parents about their schooling choice for 2020 on behalf of Wanaka Primary School and Te Kura O Take Karara so that both schools can start making decisions around roll numbers and staffing quotas.  Action is required from every family please by Friday 20th September.  

Please check your emails from last Thursday and respond asap.

Cleaning up Lake Wanaka

Chris from Touchstone has forwarded this article from Curious Minds NZ about his Touchstone project and our school's involvement in it.  A very interesting read.

Willow A Dog With A Job

Children in the Reading to Dogs programme were gifted a book by Lee Lamb called Willow, a dog with a job. Lee both wrote and illustrated the book which is based on a true story. Willow is one of the reading dogs in the Outreach Therapy Pets team, jointly sponsored by St John and the SPCA. The aim of the programme in schools and the library is to encourage reading and help children stay safe around dogs. Parents may have seen members in and out of the school in their uniforms with their canine companions! Thank you Lee for your gift and all the team who volunteer their time at school.

Entertainment and Catwalk Fashion Parade

All Entertainers and Fashion Parade participants have been notified
of the scheduled time they will be on stage.  The programme is tight so please ensure you are on time.  Any queries please see Wendy.
 
 

Health and Safety

To ensure this event runs smoothly and is enjoyed by all please remember:
  • All children under 14 must be supervised by their caregiver AT ALL TIMES.
  • The playgrounds will be cordoned off and out of bounds. 
  • No dogs please.

When to Keep Your Child at Home

Pip McLean our local Public Health Nurse has kindly passed this information to us - should you wish to get in contact with Pip her contact details are: 0272 839 395.

Keep your child at home when they:
  • have signs of being unwell i.e. grizzly, unsettled, listless or tired
  • have high temperatures or appear very hot
  • are complaining of, or appear to have a sore tummy, throat or ears
  • have had diarrhea or vomitting within the last 48 hours
  • have weeping, red eyes and/or a yellow discharge around the eyes
  • have broken skin sores
  • have become ill with a communicable disease e.g. measles, chickenpox.
If you are unsure, call a Doctor or Healthline for free health advice - 0800 611 116.  Please inform school if your child is going to be kept home due to illness.

Student Achievement in Music

Congratulations go out to Kaitlyn Tooley who sat her Grade 2 piano exam ABRSM and received a merit. Well done.

Student Achievement in Cross Country

Congratulations to Jack Sides who recently claimed the title of Otago Cross Country Champion in the year six boys race.  An awesome achievement - well done!

Year 5 and 6 Touch

Year 5 and 6 touch will be played on Mondays from 4-5pm at the Wanaka Show Grounds. The first 15-30 minutes will be a warm up and skills followed by one game of 14 minutes each way.

Start date is:  Monday 14th October 2019 (week 1 of term 4)
Finals will be held on:   Monday 9th December with one cancellation day the 16th December.

Trish’s Kids Mountain Biking Skills Clinic

Trish’s kids mountain bike skills clinic is back. 
Classes start Tuesday 15th October - 6 spaces in each class
  • 3.30-4.30pm - GIRLS ONLY ages 9-12 years old
  • 4.30-5.30pm - 9-11 year old boys and girls
  • Cost is $135 for 9 sessions (last session 10th December)
Intermediate skills required.  Suit kids who can stand up on pedals when riding downhill and ride most of the top of Deans Bank Loop.  Bikes must have gears with front and rear brakes.  This term we will be riding at Hikuwai, Lismore, Sticky and Deans Bank.  Contact Trish on wriggle47@gmail.com to register and get further information.
