Ssssh...Most of the Senior School, are at Camp It is reasonably quiet around school this week with the Year 5s, Pod 7 Year 6s and Year 4s all on camp. However, the fun and frivolity at interval and lunchtime doesn't sound much different from the comfort of my office! There's nothing I like better than the sound of happy, engaged children enjoying playing with their friends. Pod Artwork Unveiling Thanks to the group of parents and the community who came along to help us celebrate the wonderful gift of our pod artwork, beautifully designed and painted by Chrissy Wickes using children's design ideas. These paintings will be mounted on the outside of pods, under the pod name and number, hopefully by the end of the week. We invite you all to then come in and enjoy a leisurely tour of the gorgeous designs that tell our school story of Weni and the Kowhai Tree. We have attached the story, gifted to us by MaryAnn Tamati 10 years ago, and includes a copy of the paintings here in this link. School Writing Report The leadership team is currently administering a school wide writing task from Year 1 to 6, which we will assess and then moderate. These results will then be compared to the beginning of year writing task and a school writing report will be produced and presented to the Board. This information will also be in our school newsletter in 4 or so weeks...it takes us that long to go through the marking and moderation process of over 600 stories. Language Options Last night at our Board meeting four students and Kerry presented a summary of our Year 5 Mandarin programme sharing what they have been learning. There are 25 Year 5s in our Mandarin group this year. As this has been so successful we are looking at extending our language teaching next year and offer a choice to all of our Year 5 and 6 students. Children can choose from Mandarin Level 1, Mandarin Level 2 (the current year 5s will move to Level 2), Japanese, German, French, Spanish, and extension Maori. We are so pleased with the trial Mandarin learning this year that we are excited to be able to offer more options. Language learning extends the brain's wiring and so not only are we building your child's brain capability but also give them the experience of learning a second language in Year 5 and 6. We have teachers in all of these languages who are familiar to some level with one of these and we will fund quality resources to ensure all children have success in second language learning. We also have experts in our community we can tap into to build our capabilities. Exciting stuff. We will be asking children to indicate their language preference in a few weeks and then we will ask you to confirm their option for learning another language in the first days back at school next year. So have a think and talk with your child. Bottom Carpark A big thank you to all the drivers who wait patiently for the buses to leave or for others pulling out from over on the dental clinic side of the car park. We aim to get everybody out of the car park as quickly and as safely as possible so please do continue to follow our parking warden’s instructions. If you see the bus pulling out please stop at the cones, the buses do have a tight schedule to work towards. Thank you for your cooperation…and remember the speed cameras are focused on Totara Terrace. |

Head Lice There have been some cases of Head Lice at school. Head lice are an (unwelcome) part of life, and are easily spread between people, particularly children. The key to managing head lice is early detection: look through your child’s hair on a regular basis – nominate a certain night of the week so it becomes routine. Use your fingers or a head lice comb, and look for little brown insects on the scalp. The eggs are almost invisible before they hatch, so by the time you spot the little white eggs on the hair shaft they are already hatched. Do not treat your child unless you see live lice. The best treatment is thorough combing with a head lice comb and lots of conditioner in the hair. This should be done every 2nd day for 10 days. If you choose to use a head lice shampoo, you should still do the wet combing as described above. Shampoos do not kill eggs, and do not always kill all the live lice. Do not use animal products on your child’s scalp. They are harmful to humans. For more information: www.healthed.govt.nz/resources/headlice-facts. |

Chesspower National Champions Trophy Tournament On Sunday 25th October 2020, Zac Croft from Pod 8 took part in the Chesspower National Champions Trophy Tournament in Auckland. He qualified for this national tournament with an outstanding performance at the Chesspower Central Otago Regional Chess Tournament that was held here at Wānaka Primary School back in August. On Sunday in Auckland, he had to play nine games of chess against the best chess players of his age group across the country, some of which came to the tournament with their private chess coaches. Zac managed to win four out of the nine games which is a fantastic result considering that this was just his second tournament overall. So the hard training with his dad, who also supported him in the tournament, paid off and he can be really proud of his achievement. Well done Zac and keep playing chess at MAC next year! |
