No late orders will be accepted. Return Reading Books Please This year we have experienced difficulty with many children not returning their reading book each day. This is something that should be embedded into the children's daily routine by now. If we do not receive the books back, then other children are missing out on reading material as well as this being a huge cost to the school in replacing books. Therefore, it is timely for everyone to check the house for reading books to return please, as well as reinforcing this daily return and swap routine. Many thanks for your support. Scholastic Book Orders Most of the Scholastic book orders have been distributed to students although some back orders are still to arrive. If you ordered a page of stickers - 'A special Gift of Reading for you' - please contact Katrina to collect. Parent Help Wanted for the Scholastic Bookfair Monday 25th - Friday 29th November - before and after school. Any help would be appreciated. Please call Melissa in the library on 443 7687 ext 7010. MAC and NCEA Exams NCEA exams are still underway at MAC this week - please ensure children know to stay away from the barriers and walk around the far side of the tennis courts if they are entering MAC grounds. |

'Be On Cosie's Team' You may be aware that Marj Cosgrove's hubby Cosie has been diagnosed with cancer. The Wanaka Community are rallying around to support Cosie. Like Blair Vining, he cannot access all the health help he needs through public services, and has to access his next course of treatment privately. Marj and Cosie are valued members of our school and wider community; Marj has been an esteemed member of our teaching team for 12 years. On Monday 2nd December, the staff are dressing up to raise some funds to help with treatments during this tough time. 'We're on Cosie's Team' is our theme and we want to raise some funds to put on a 'Give a Little' page supporters have set up for Cosie, to help with these medical costs. We are inviting children...and any parents who may wish to join us...to come dressed in their favourite sporting team's shirt or colours (as Cosie is a sports fanatic) and bring a gold coin donation. It will be nice to show Marj and Cosie how much we care and to support his upcoming medical costs. Come on join us ... 'Be on Cosie's Team!' Give a Little Page (click here) |

End of Year Reporting - Interactive Reporting Expos All parents are invited to our new innovative end of year reporting expos we have developed in line with our Deep Learning work. The format is similar to the Deep Dives our teachers do to learn more about the evidence of Deep Learning. The children and teachers are starting to get ready to show you the work that will highlight their progress and achievement over the year, along with evidence such as assessments, their workbooks and work around the classroom. Children will be rehearsing their presentations, following prompts/scripts so that you get to see the important aspects of their work. We are aiming for students and parents to be actively involved in the process as research, and our own experience of recent expos, shows this to be very powerful. You will learn so much more than a paragraph on a report form can tell you. Teacher time, that would have been spent writing reports, now goes in to supporting the children and setting up the learning environment so their learning and the assessments are demystified and transparent. You will still get a written report but it has a different look and will be a much more realistic and positive experience for our learners, and you too. We have noted how our students LOOK FORWARD to sharing their learning at expos and we aim to capture that same buzz as part of our reporting. We urge as many of you as possible to come along on Wednesday 4th December - Pods 2, 3 and 4 have the 1.30-2.15pm time slot and then Pods 5, 6, 7 and 8 have the 2.15-3.00pm time slot. Students will also be presenting to parents from 5.00-6.00pm on the same day, but there won't be the same buzz with lots of people around and groups sharing their work, so if you can make the afternoon sessions do it. At our expos, we find children who don't have a parent to present to are rather disappointed, so we will ensure that one of our staff will fill in to be the roving fill-in parent and be with children whose parent is not attending. Children will also share their end of year written report with parents during the expo. Teachers will be roving and available to talk, but it you need more time and want to schedule a follow up time with the specific teacher please do so. There will be no formal process for this. After these interactive reporting expos, we will be seeking your feedback so that we can further build on these to make them more effective for our learners and for you as parents. Deep learning is all about student agency and learning relationships with parents, teachers and students. You will learn about how your children are working with regard to appropriate curriculum levels for their year level, their progress and attitudes and their deep learning and competencies too. And if you still need more information, the teacher is available during and after the expos. We can pack so much more into these expos about your child than we could in a written report. We hope you find that too. We are all very excited about these upcoming interactive reporting expos. Symphony Orchestra We have the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra coming to perform for all students on Thursday 28th November at 9am - a real treat. We are so fortunate that they have offered to perform for us. Pod 2 Assembly - Parking! Pod 2 assembly is on this week and our junior assemblies are always well attended. We love having you all come to our assemblies, but remember you often don't return to your car until 3pm or after. So please ensure you DO NOT park in the pick up drop off areas when you come to assembly and park sensibly, as poor parking only encourages similar behaviour from others. Thanks to all the parents who have said how wonderful it has been to have the PUDO (Pick up Drop off) and dental clinic carpark working so smoothly. I know Claire and Tim do a great job in the carpark and this is now a safer area for our children. I would also like to say that the drivers I see everyday in the PUDO area have been respectful, their children are training them well and it is running smoothly, with no cars blocking the carpark or patrolled crossing area anymore. Thank you all for keeping our children safe. |

Room 24's Welcome Sign Last term Room 24 was working on developing our understanding of what it is to be a global citizen. We learned about discrimination, racism, stereotyping and how we can eliminate these behaviours from our world. The more discussion we had in class, the more we realised we had to ‘take action’ and make sure part of our school culture included celebrating people’s differences and the diverse cultures within our school. To ‘take action’ our class decided that it would be a good idea to make a welcome sign which had welcome written in all the languages of families in our school. We were surprised at the number of languages spoken by families that attend our school. There are 21 languages spoken. We created two signs that we are going to put around the school. One is going in the office area and two are being put at the school entrances. The Board of Trustees have agreed to help us raise the money to pay for these signs. We are having a 'Bake Sale in Pod 6 this Friday 22nd November' and we would like everyone's support. A big thanks from Room 24. Levi and Dan

Writing Instruments and Colgate Recycling Programme Wanaka Primary School is a collection point for the 'Writing Instruments' and the 'Colgate Oral Care' Recycling Programme. Bins are located in the library foyer and the following products can be placed in the 'Writing Instruments' bin: pens, felt tips, highlighters, markers, mechanical pencils, fountain pens, ink cartridges, correction tape and white out pots. And in the 'Colgate Oral Care' bin: toothpaste tube and caps, floss containers, toothbrushes, toothbrush, toothpaste and floss outer packaging and mouthwash bottles. The waste is recycled and we can get recycled benches and tables for our efforts. A huge thank you goes out to Donnelle Dunlop as she has instigated and is managing this project on behalf of the school.
