This month, we look at the City’s 2022/23 budget and some of the exciting projects coming up in our community in the next 12 months. We also share how you can have your say on future planning for our City and celebrate the start of 2022 NAIDOC Week, which runs from 3 to 10 July. Deputy Mayor Brett Treby Balanced budget delivers for City of Wanneroo residentsThe City of Wanneroo adopted a $235 million 2022/23 budget this week, allocating a $58.4 million for capital works, with investment in a range of community services and facilities to benefit everyone. This budget ensures our community will benefit from new sporting and community facilities, safer and more efficient roads, vibrant and accessible parks and playgrounds and enhanced community safety. 2022/23 Budget highlightsCelebrate NAIDOC WeekTo mark NAIDOC Week 2022, which runs from 3 – 10 July, the City will hold a series of community events, including a Flag Raising Event, to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, language and culture. This year’s theme is ‘Get up! Stand up! Show up!’, which encourages everyone to support systemic change and help secure institutional, structural, collaborative and cooperative reforms. It also calls for recognition of the many people who have driven and led change in our communities over generations – the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights. NAIDOC Week at the CityWanneroo aquatic centre safety measures make a splashWanneroo Aquamotion has taken out the Aquatic Facility Safety Award at the inaugural WA Aquatic Recreation Industry Awards held today. The Leisure Institute of Western Australia awards celebrate individual and organisational excellence in the State’s aquatic recreation industry. The Aquatic Facility Safety Award recognises commitment to continuous improvement of aquatic health and safety outcomes through outstanding safety culture. Curtin University's Ignition Program helps aspiring entrepreneurs, academics and corporate innovators trial and prepare their business idea for the market. The City is offering two fully funded scholarships for residents or local businesses for the 2022 program. Nurse Nicola Cuthbert took part in last year’s program and said the scholarship was instrumental in helping launch her business, Still Me. Ignite your idea todayHave your say on on the future of the CityThe City is preparing its first Local Planning Strategy that will outline objectives for future land use planning and development, and we want to hear your views! The document will guide decision making around future land use in the City, so it’s important that it reflects the planning and development aspirations of our community. Share your views on important planning topics, such as housing, community facilities, the environment, employment, tourism and heritage, to go in the running to win a $100 Bunnings voucher! Have your sayCity seeks feedback on Urban Forest StrategyDo you care about protecting, retaining and improving the City's tree canopy and vegetation? Make sure you have your say on our draft Urban Forest Strategy. The strategy looks at increasing our tree canopy and addressing heat islands – urban areas that experience higher temperatures than outlying areas due to structures such as buildings, roads, and other infrastructure absorbing and re-emitting the sun's heat. Have your sayYouth trailer wins young fansThe City of Wanneroo’s Childhood and Youth Services trailer has been wheeled out at events and community spaces across the City from Yanchep to Girrawheen and is proving to be a hit with young locals. Launched at the start of the year, the trailer is used for youth outreach at the City’s parks and skate parks, as well as to carry out school holiday programs in community spaces and at events.
