This month, we welcomed dedicated bike riders to our free WA Bike Month community breakfast and celebrated global recognition for our Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre community engagement strategy. With the festive season approaching, we're getting ready for the Mayor's Christmas Appeal. From Monday 31 October, the City will be seeking donations of toys and non-perishable food to help community members doing it tough this Christmas. I encourage you to donate if you have the means and help bring Christmas cheer to local families. Read on for more details! Mayor Linda Aitken Community cycle to celebrate WA Bike Month 2022In celebration of WA Bike Month 2022, the City hosted a free community breakfast last week, with people donning helmets and taking to the streets. Supported by WestCycle and the Department of Transport, the breakfast encouraged people of all ages and abilities to ride bikes for transport, fun and for a healthier lifestyle. Find out moreWangara CCTV security upgradeIn a win for community safety, local businesses and residents will soon benefit from 13 CCTV smart poles to be installed across Wangara. The cameras have Automatic Number Plate Recognition, which supports road safety by helping identify offending vehicles and drivers and helps deter, detect and disrupt illegal activity. The project was funded by the Australian Government, which committed $1.2 million, and the City of Wanneroo. Read moreCity recognised at global awardsThe City is proud to be a finalist in the 2022 City Nation Place Awards, which recognise organisations across the globe for strategic thinking, marketing and design. The City has been nominated in the Best Citizen Engagement category for the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre community engagement strategy and is one of only two Australian organisations to have made the finals. Using social media, a digital mapping tool and an advocacy campaign featuring Olympic swimmer Blair Evans, the strategy had extremely positive results including funding pledges from both major federal political parties. Read moreTender awarded for upgrade of Clarkson Youth CentreUpgrades to modernise the Clarkson Youth Centre are a step closer after a tender was awarded this month. The upgrades are funded by a $1 million contribution through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, $500,000 through Lotterywest and a City of Wanneroo contribution. The centre is now closed for works, but the community can still access youth programs from Butler Community Centre on Wednesdays and Fridays. Clarkson Skate Park will remain open and the youth trailer will be on-site each Thursday from 3.30pm to 6pm. Each week will feature animal guests, such as popular therapy dog Angus. Aimed at three to five-year-olds, this free program runs from 9.30am to 10.30am every Tuesday until the end of November. Nominate hereHelp save our precious snake-necked turtlesThe City is collaborating with the City of Joondalup, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Murdoch University and the South West Group to participate in the Saving our Snake-necked Turtle Project, funded by Lotterywest. Yellagonga Regional Park wetlands are home to the Southwestern snake-necked turtle which are under threat from feral animals and native birds, road strikes and lack of suitable nesting habitat.
