This month, we launch our fantastic free events season, which kicks off with the Wanneroo Festival, we celebrate an exciting nod from FIFA for Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex and keep you updated on key community projects. I would also like to share my thanks with our community for voting in the City’s recent Extraordinary Mayoral Election. As the City’s new Mayor I am excited to continue working with my fellow Councillors and City staff to deliver for our community. Happy reading, Mayor Linda Aitken Wanneroo Festival kicks off free events seasonThe City has a fantastic new free events season planned for residents from this October to April 2023. From festivals and sideshows, to concerts and markets, exciting events will be held across the City, providing entertainment for people of all ages. The season kicks off with the Wanneroo Festival on Saturday 29 October from 4pm to 9pm at the Wanneroo Showgrounds. Read moreKingsway eyed off internationallyKingsway Regional Sporting Complex has been shortlisted to be a team base camp for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™. The current floodlighting will be replaced with 500 lux lights to meet standards for professional matches. After qualifying for the World Cup, the 29 delegations will be able to visit the sites in the country where they are drawn to play their group matches and submit their preferred choices to FIFA. Find out moreLandsdale's Library and Youth Innovation HubThank you to everyone who provided feedback on the concept design for Dordaak Kepap, Landsdale’s Library and Youth Innovation Hub. The proposed concept for the $10.2 million facility features an open plan reading area, public meeting rooms and activity rooms, a recording studio, control booth and podcasting room, a demonstration kitchen, gaming and virtual reality space. Dordaak Kepap (pronounced dor-dark kep-up) is a Noongar word meaning ‘place of living waters’. The City received a $3 million State Government grant to put towards the project, with construction scheduled for the 2023/24 financial year. The funds will be used for renourishment works at Quinns Beach and Yanchep Lagoon Beach, an aerial survey of beaches and coastal structures, offshore sediment investigations, and data collection. Wanneroo’s firefighting capacity increasesA new mobile forward command trailer will add to the firefighting capabilities of the Wanneroo Central Bush Fire Brigade. The 75-strong volunteer brigade received a $30,000 Caring for Our Communities grant from the State Government to purchase the vehicle, which will help with fire mitigation activities across the City and support major incidents.
