Welcome to the September edition of Wanneroo Link.

This month, we launch our fantastic free events season, which kicks off with the Wanneroo Festival, we celebrate an exciting nod from FIFA for Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex and keep you updated on key community projects.

I would also like to share my thanks with our community for voting in the City’s recent Extraordinary Mayoral Election. As the City’s new Mayor I am excited to continue working with my fellow Councillors and City staff to deliver for our community.

Wanneroo Festival kicks off free events season

The City has a fantastic new free events season planned for residents from this October to April 2023.

From festivals and sideshows, to concerts and markets, exciting events will be held across the City, providing entertainment for people of all ages.

The season kicks off with the Wanneroo Festival on Saturday 29 October from 4pm to 9pm at the Wanneroo Showgrounds.

Kingsway eyed off internationally

Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex has been shortlisted to be a team base camp for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™.

The current floodlighting will be replaced with 500 lux lights to meet standards for professional matches.

After qualifying for the World Cup, the 29 delegations will be able to visit the sites in the country where they are drawn to play their group matches and submit their preferred choices to FIFA.

Landsdale's Library and Youth Innovation Hub

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the concept design for Dordaak Kepap, Landsdale’s Library and Youth Innovation Hub.

The proposed concept for the $10.2 million facility features an open plan reading area, public meeting rooms and activity rooms, a recording studio, control booth and podcasting room, a demonstration kitchen, gaming and virtual reality space.

Dordaak Kepap (pronounced dor-dark kep-up) is a Noongar word meaning ‘place of living waters’. The City received a $3 million State Government grant to put towards the project, with construction scheduled for the 2023/24 financial year.

Local Lens: 2022 photography competition

Calling all budding photographers and aspiring shutterbugs! This is your chance to showcase the City and our most photogenic sights through your lens.

The theme of this year’s photography competition is ‘Connected Communities’.

Hurry – entries close Friday 7 October at 5pm!

City’s coastal management efforts receive a boost

Four projects at our local beaches have been granted more than $222,000 through the State Government’s CoastWA program.

The funds will be used for renourishment works at Quinns Beach and Yanchep Lagoon Beach, an aerial survey of beaches and coastal structures, offshore sediment investigations, and data collection.

The funding boosts the City’s ongoing coastal management activities.

Wanneroo Business Awards now open

Entries are now open for the 2022 City of Wanneroo Business Awards!

The awards are a highlight of the local business calendar and a great opportunity to celebrate the success of a wide variety of amazing local businesses.

The Wanneroo Business Association's annual awards celebrate excellence across 12 categories, including customer service, technology, innovation and leadership.

Stay safe from swooping magpies this spring

Residents are urged to take precautions when walking and cycling near nesting magpies in parks and bushland areas.
Magpies breed between August and October and defend their eggs and chicks by flying low and fast to intimidate people who enter their territory.
Did you know wearing a hat and sunglasses and carrying an umbrella can help you stay safe from swooping magpies?

Wanneroo’s firefighting capacity increases

A new mobile forward command trailer will add to the firefighting capabilities of the Wanneroo Central Bush Fire Brigade.

The 75-strong volunteer brigade received a $30,000 Caring for Our Communities grant from the State Government to purchase the vehicle, which will help with fire mitigation activities across the City and support major incidents.

Clarkson Youth Centre

Clarkson Youth Centre is closing on 10 October for building works, but you can still access our youth programs from Butler Community Centre.

Clarkson Skate Park will remain open and the youth trailer will be on-site each Thursday from 3.30pm-6pm.

Free grant workshop

Join us for a free workshop about raising funds beyond government grants.

This interactive workshop will assist community, sporting and recreation groups to think outside of the box when it comes to fundraising.

Bulk waste collections

We want to hear your feedback on a proposed bulk waste collection service that would allow residents to pre-book verge-side bulk junk and greens collections.
