Money laundering: Don’t try this at home!

Protecting yourself from COVID-19 involves plenty of obsessive cleaning. But what in the world is anyone supposed to do with cash — which changes hands frequently and is often covered in germs? Well, one thing you should absolutely not do is attempt to wash your money in a washing machine. Just ask one unfortunate resident of Seoul, South Korea, who attempted to clean tens of thousands of dollars in his own machine at home.

According to representatives from the Bank of Korea, who provided the man with new bills after he gave them his damaged ones, the “loss was considerable.” Most of the bills were melted, faded and even burned in some cases, and he ended up with about $20,000 in the end. That’s apparently less than half of what he started with! We’ll stick to plastic, please. Despite what you might think, it’s easy to fit that much money in a washer. Even $1 million is somewhat easy to carry around.
