Dear reader,

As the lockdown gradually morphs into more targeted restrictions, it seems like an appropriate time to reflect on it as a policy. We asked 18 leading experts and Telegraph writers to assess the lockdown, its effectiveness and its impact in Britain on health and science, politics, economics and society. It’s very much worth a read.

Last week, The Telegraph discovered an extraordinary photograph of Kevin Spacey and Ghislaine Maxwell, the socialite who was recently arrested by the FBI and charged with helping to recruit and groom underage girls for her ex-boyfriend, the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. It showed them sitting on thrones in Buckingham Palace. They were there on the invitation of Prince Andrew, and in this piece Patrick Sawer and Robert Mendick reveal the inside story of how a trip to the UK with Bill Clinton got them through the doors of the palace.

Finally, evidence is building that women in the UK are being hit particularly hard by the economic impacts of the coronavirus. Marina Gask has found that many women are suffering from “interrupted” careers, with the lockdown putting their work progression on hold. Marina spoke to a number of women whose professional lives have been disrupted by Covid-19 or other major life changes, and provides a number of strategies for overcoming career interruptions.
