Get Ready for the Solar Eclipse On Monday, August 21, a total solar eclipse will cross the entire United States for the first time since 1918. Over the course of 100 minutes, 14 states will experience more than 2 minutes of darkness in the middle of the day. Are you ready? Do you know what you need to know? On Monday, August 7, Tim Knauer, Director of the University of Kentucky’s MacAdam Student Observatory, will be at the library to answers questions about the eclipse. Where do I have to be to see it? How can I watch it safely? When will my next chance be to see a total eclipse? What can I expect to see? Tim Knauer has the answers for you. All ages are welcome at this presentation, and free solar eclipse glasses will be available. Register here. If your school-age child is interested in the eclipse, sign him/her up for this month's STEAM Club meeting,There Goes the Sun, on August 17, where children will learn about the eclipse through stories and activities. The 4:30pm session is for kids in grades K-2. The 5:30pm session is for tweens in grades 3-5. Registration opens on August 7, so mark your calendars! Free solar eclipse glasses will be available for participants. What are your plans for the big event? We invite you to join us during the day for NASA's Livestream of the eclipse (on the big screen in the Community Room!). NASA will cover this rare event with observation sites from all over the country including airplanes, ground telescopes, and even high altitude balloons. |
