Your Wednesday evening update from the Lancashire Post
View email online | | | | | Jan 26, 2022 | | | | | | Good evening, It seems that every way we turn there is another cost of living rise approaching us. Energy bills are rocketing by around 100 per cent this year, vehicle fuel is also going up, food prices seem to rise every week and now we need to prepare for a National Insurance increase in April. And as we head towards February, we are going to see local councils, fire and police services seek a rise in the money they receive locally - probably by the maximum of 1.9 per cent. And yet, for the most part, wages are not increasing at the same pace as the cost of living. Some of us may be able to remember how this played out back in the 1980s. It led to rocketing house prices and huge rises in inflation and interest rates, disenfranchising more than half of the population from being able to get out of rented housing or ever being able to save money for a rainy day. We don’t want to return to those dark days, so we need to see some action to ensure people can actually afford to eat as well as heat their homes throughout 2022. That doesn’t seem like too much to ask, does it? Until next time, take care, Gillian Contact me at gillian.parkinson@jpress.co.uk | |
