Message From the Editor Dear reader, We are so grateful for your support this past year — and right now the global prospects for bold climate action are facing stiff headwinds. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent shockwaves through global energy markets, giving Big Oil & Gas a major boost. Soaring profits, once-defeated infrastructure projects back on the table, geopolitical gambles for ‘energy security’ that displaced momentum towards a just transition… the list of consequences goes on and on. What doesn’t grow is the amount of time the world has to stop dangerous climate change. That’s why our hard-hitting investigative journalism matters more than ever — and our growing team of journalists is committed to chasing critical stories wherever in the world we can make a difference. Whether evading the sketchy cyber-spying at Egypt’s COP27, or driving through floodwaters to reach hurricane-damaged communities along the Gulf Coast, our journalists face increasing risks when reporting from the front lines of the climate justice movement. With your support we are able to hold the powerful accountable, including through our ongoing investigations into industry ‘escape hatches’ including blue hydrogen, CCS, petrochemicals, and fossil fuel-intensive industrial agriculture. We also continue to tell the stories of frontline communities hit hardest by fossil fuel pollution and the climate crisis — people who are fighting not just for a better future, but for their survival right now. We’re dedicated to independent journalism in the public interest, and couldn’t do it without your help! Thanks, Brendan and the DeSmog team
