Good news – together, we have taken a huge step forward in our fight to stop the French government from turning Firefox and other browsers into tools of censorship. 

On Friday, a special committee adopted an amended text that could remove the risk of browser level censorship from the proposed French tech bill SREN. In this committee, French lawmakers directly cited the concerns raised by Mozilla experts and our community. 

Over 65,000 people signed our petition calling on the French government to dump their plans to censor the web. What happened in the committee is a direct result of our campaign and shows that people power works.

Multiple lawmakers offered amendments in our favor – one amendment was even titled the “Mozilla Amendment”. 

One thing is clear – our voices have been heard. But this fight isn’t over yet. These changes must pass through a few more hurdles: a plenary vote in the National Assembly, followed by discussions with the Senate and then a vote on the final agreement in both houses of the French Parliament.

Our campaign is clearly working, but the next vote is happening in early October and some lawmakers are still pushing for harmful measures in the bill. To win, we need to keep up this momentum and increase the pressure on French politicians.

We don't have much time to stop this bill from turning browsers like Firefox into tools of censorship. Mozilla’s legislative advisors report that the next discussion of the bill will take place in the first half of October.

The next few weeks are critical for us to ensure that all French politicians properly understand the ramifications of browser-level internet censorship.
