MPR News Update
Good morning and happy Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know to start your day.

President Trump will make try selling world leaders on his “America First” approach to foreign policy as he addresses the U.N. General Assembly today. His speech comes as U.S. leaders seek other countries to help respond to aggression from Iran, NPR reports. However, the President has said, "We're not looking for any mediators,” and if Iran wants to talk, "they know who to call." Watch the speech live. It is expected to start at 9 a.m.

Angie Craig and Dean Phillips want an impeachment investigation of Trump. The first-term House Democrats joined a chorus of their peers calling for impeachment proceedings for the president following news that Trump discussed former Vice President Joe Biden and his son with the leader of Ukraine. The elder Biden is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, making some critics believe Trump’s goal was to hurt a political challenger. As the Washington Post reports, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says any impeachment trial would need some Republican support. Senate Republicans, so far, are backing the president and say they probably wouldn’t convict Trump if there was a trial.

Pressure mounts on Klobuchar campaign to step it up. The Democratic National Committee is raising the bar for candidates to qualify for the next debate, the Washington Post reports . Candidates will need to prove they have 165,000 unique donors, which is 30,000 more than required to qualify for the October debates. That threshold would cut off Sen. Amy Klobuchar, among other contenders, if they don’t hit the donor threshold and new polling minimums in the upcoming weeks.

St. Paul police are releasing body camera video showing the fatal shooting of Roland Davis. Davis, of Little Canada, had rear-ended a squad car and then reportedly confronted the officer with a knife. He was the 10th person killed by police in Minnesota this year, and his death helped prompt protests in St. Paul over the weekend. We’ll cover the video release as it happens later today.

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood.” That’s what 16-year-old climate advocate Greta Thunberg told the United Nations as world leaders began their Climate Action Summit this week in New York. The Swedish teenager has led the way for youth activists pushing generations in power to take meaningful action on what they describe as a climate change crisis.

Homelessness is increasing in Duluth. More than 1,100 households are on a list of homeless people awaiting housing, the Duluth News Tribune reports. That’s a 26 percent increase from last year. “I can tell you we’ve always seen a lot of singles with high barriers on the wait list,” an advocate told the newspaper. “But we’re seeing more and more families and multi-person households.”

Harry Flynn, the former archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis who left behind a mixed legacy, has died at age 86. High points of his career include calling attention to climate change and poverty, advocating for a minimum wage increase. But, as some of our audience noted, he also banned Mass at a conference on ministering to gay Catholics and  helped keep quiet allegations of sexual abuse by priests. “Anyone complicit in the abuse of children will be judged by a higher power,” Gayle Woodhouse Collova wrote on Facebook.

We’re many months away from tax season, but some tax pros are telling people to get started early. They’re advising people to take a hard look at their withholdings now to make sure they don’t get a surprise later. We’re looking to speak with taxpayers who recently altered their withholding to reduce their anticipated liability for 2020 or to slim an anticipated refund. Have you? Sunisa Lee and Grace McCallum are going to the gymnastics world championships. The Minnesota women, of St. Paul and Isanti, respectively, will join four other gymnasts to represent Team USA at the FIG Gymnastics World Championships next month.

Another warm fall day is in store. It’ll be a sunny morning with clouds moving in later. Afternoon thunderstorms are likely in the north, moving south in the evening. In southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities, highs near 80. Around 70 in the northeast. More on Updraft.
