Arafa Osman Ishag is lucky to be alive.
Her husband was killed when a bomb struck a market in the war-torn city of El Fasher, Sudan.
As fighting intensified, she managed to flee the city with her eight children. Over 800,000 people remain trapped in El Fasher — including other members of Arafa’s family — cut off from food, water and medical support.
Arafa and her children spent six harrowing days on the road to reach the border with Chad. They escaped the fighting, but their lives are still at risk. They are now sheltering in the open, with only sticks to hold up a flimsy cloth shelter.
UNHCR’s dedicated teams are on the ground, helping families like Arafa’s move to safer areas, including new refugee sites where they can access shelter, clean water and other essential services. Teams are also distributing cash so starving families can buy food.
But UNHCR urgently needs more help to scale up the emergency response and save lives.

Right now, Sudan is facing an extreme health and humanitarian crisis.

On top of this, recent heavy rains and flooding have caused havoc, affecting over 400,000 people and delaying the delivery of humanitarian supplies. A new outbreak of cholera is also threatening lives in displaced communities.
UNHCR and its partners are working tirelessly in Sudan and neighbouring countries to expand existing refugee settlements and establish new ones with critical services like family shelters, health clinics, sanitation and learning spaces.
