I’m writing to update you on the wonderful support our donors are providing for the people of Ukraine.
On the news, we’ve seen devastating scenes. Families torn apart. Women and children queuing for days at borders. Citizens sheltering from the bombing in subway stations. At the same time, however, we’ve witnessed an enormous outpouring of generosity and support from the global community – from families opening up their homes to refugees, to community groups providing food and clothing.
Australians are an important part of that response. In the first week of our emergency appeal for Ukraine, I’ve been humbled by the generosity of our supporters, who have stepped up to provide vital support to vulnerable women, children and men.
With the support of everyday Australians, UNCHR is sending supplies to Ukraine and neighbouring countries. To date, we have:
Delivered two shipments of emergency relief items, including sleeping mats and water jerry-cans, to Ukraine
Distributed thermal blankets, baby kits, hygiene items, solar lamps and tents to refugees arriving in Moldova
Provided assessment tools to help border authorities identify and support those most in need in Romania
Begun establishing a dedicated help line and developing resources on protection from sexual exploitation, abuse and trafficking for refugees arriving in Poland
Helped authorities establish and operate reception centres across the region
UNHCR staff will stay and deliver for as long as this crisis continues. Our staff are working in incredibly difficult circumstances to provide support and protection to everyone who needs our help. And we will continue to call for the protection of civilians and reliable access for humanitarian relief.
Supporter, I know I can count on you to stand with us, and with the millions of people whose lives have been upended, during this crisis. My sincere thanks for everything you do to support refugees.
