Making an impact Lord Wei of Shoreditch calls upon us all to be more impactful, with his report, commissioned by Future Planet Capital, which sets out how venture capital can provide the solution to harnessing university-originated innovation, enabling, he says, a next generation of entrepreneurs to supercharge efforts to solve the biggest problems like climate change, health, educations, and security issues, whilst still delivering profits for investors.
2022 has started out with a strong ESG and sustainability theme and Lord Wei’s comments bring the theoretical to the world of investment.
Our In My Opinion this week comes from Belinda Thomas, Partner and Head of Sales at Triple Point, who writes that the Autumn Budget came and went without any notable implications for estate planning. However, she warns that the level of economic uncertainty at the moment could see the government seek to increase
tax revenues, including IHT. Her recommendation is to look at Business Relief. She writes that BR enables straightforward and fast relief from IHT and, crucially, is done in the client’s name so there is no loss of control of their capital. If an investor has held shares in a qualifying business for a minimum of two years and holds them at the date of death, then the shares qualify for BR and are not liable for any IHT.
And Covid might have given us more to inherit. Research from wealth manager Quilter, gathered by YouGov, has shown that Brits saved almost GBP4 billion as a result of the Omicron variant disrupting social plans during the festive period – an average saving of GBP212 per person.
