Wealthy donors spend big to shift Legislature's politics

By Jessica Williams | Capitol News Bureau Editor

Election spending: The Koch brothers, the petrochemical industry and others are spending big money to try to shift the Louisiana Legislature further right, Sam Karlin reports. Another set of donors, many of them trial attorneys, are backing candidates who would fight efforts to make it harder to sue corporations.

AG's role: Candidates for governor and attorney general have spent months claiming that the AG is the state's top law enforcement officer and plays a chief role in crimefighting, Karlin reports. The reality is that the AG has a minimal role in preventing the crimes most residents are concerned about.

Map hearing delayed: A Tuesday hearing on the map for Louisiana's new second congressional district has been delayed, Karlin reports; read on to learn why. At issue is a 2022 map that grants Louisiana only one majority-minority district, though it should have two such districts because of its population, the Supreme Court has said.
