N.C. weatherization funds set to nearly double, posing challenge and opportunity

There is no question that increasing the amount of insulation and reducing air leaks in all buildings and homes in North America benefits the people living there by reducing energy bills. Energy efficiency improvements for heat loss are rather common in northern climates where a “tighter” home equals warmer people in the winter. But weatherization is also important for homeowners that rely on air conditioning to keep cool, and this is often less talked about. Not only can it be life-changing for residents of hot, leaky homes in the south, but weatherization also benefits the grid by reducing demand.

Our lead story today focuses on a transformative energy efficiency upgrade in North Carolina but also explains the many challenges faced by state weatherization programs. Don’t miss it.

The rebuilt 230kV powerline segment, which includes a large tower on both sides of the river, was upgraded to withstand winds of up to 175 mph, 25 mph higher than the winds that swept through during Hurricane Ida.
