We're only just under three weeks into the season, but we've already had to deal with a ton of injuries. But the most impactful for Fantasy may have happened Sunday when David Montgomery went down with a leg injury. |
That depends on the prognosis, obviously. Montgomery suffered ankle and knee injuries during Sunday's game against the Texans, and while he was never officially ruled out for the game, he never returned following the first quarter injury. That pushed backup Khalil Herbert into a bigger role, and Herbert played like a star, rushing for 157 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win. |
And Herbert has been tremendous every time we've seen him get used like a featured back. He had over 200 yards in two starts last season, and has generally shown a level of burst that Montgomery can't really touch. If Montgomery were to miss significant time, Herbert would be a fringe RB1. |
Of course, that's the question, isn't it? After the game, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus downplayed the injury, saying it was a "day-to-day" type of injury, That might still mean Montgomery is out for Week 4, and it's possible the next few days will show more damage than expected, in which case, Herbert would be an obvious must-add player. The Bears play the Giants in Week 4. |

David Montgomery and Dalvin Cook's injuries from Sunday are the most pressing we'll be following in the coming days, simply because their prospective absences would push Khalil Herbert and Alexander Mattison (respectively) into top-12 contention at the RB position. A must-start running back is the most valuable thing you can find on the waiver wire, and both could be that. |
|
Or not. Early indications are that both players avoided serious injuries. Now, that doesn't mean Cook and Montgomery will be playing in Week 4. But it does seem as if they've both avoided a worst-case scenario. Like Montgomery, Cook's coach says he is "day-to-day," and will undergo tests on his dislocated shoulder. |
This is a recurring issue for Cook, who has an unrepaired torn labrum. He has been playing without a harness on the shoulder, but Tom Pelissero reports he will try to wear one to play through the injury in Week 4. The recurring nature of the injury highlights how much risk Cook carries with him on a weekly basis -- and highlights why Mattison remains arguably the most valuable handcuff in the game. |
Those two seem to have avoided serious injury, but until we get more details and specific confirmation that they'll be back in time for Week 4, Herbert and Mattison figure to be the top targets on waivers for Week 4. |
