The city of Los Angeles ousted unhoused community members from Echo Park, displacing residents and leaving behind a community art-led garden, community kitchen, and job program.See the transformation of 5Pointz, a historic monument to graffiti art that has been unrecognizably transformed into a bleak luxury high rise.

Combatting Cultural Erasure

In Building Black: Civilizations, part of an ongoing series of Lego sculptures, Ekow Nimako defies the erasure of medieval sub-Saharan civilizations by imagining them as futuristic kingdoms.The University of California Los Angeles has a newly digitized Archive of Healing, a trove of hundreds of thousands of entries that includes two centuries of cures, rituals, and healing methods, with a focus on Indigenous knowledge.

After hundreds of artists called for his removal, Leon Black will not bid for re-election as chairman of the Museum of Modern Art’s board of trustees. However, the financier will remain on the board.In Tunis, an appeals court released Rania Amdouni, a prominent LGBTQ activist and artist, who had been sentenced to six months in prison on charges of “insulting” the police. She is one of many Tunisian LGBTQ activists who report being routinely targeted and attacked by the country’s security forces.UK authorities are prohibited from searching Queen Elizabeth II’s home for looted goods. The exception for the royal is part of an act established in 2017 giving police the power to investigate areas where they suspect stolen artifacts may be held.Designer Stella McCartney presented an outfit featuring Mylo, a new form of vegan “leather” made of the root network of mushrooms.

Awards & Accolades

The artist collective “Hannah Arendt Institute for Artivism” (INSTAR) and its founder Tania Bruguera were awarded the 2021 Arnold Bode Prize. | Teller Report Karrabing Film Collective was awarded the EYE Art & Film Prize 202. Nadia Liz Estela and Linn Meyers were selected for the Hayama Artist Residency in Japan.

Transitions

Nicole Cavender was named the Telleen/Jorgensen Director of the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. Dominic Chambers is now represented by Roberts Projects. The artist dream hampton joined the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit’s Board of Directors. Lawrence W. Nichols will retire from the Toledo Museum of Art as the William Hutton senior curator of European and American painting and sculpture before 1900. Pablo de Ocampo was named director and curator of moving image at the Walker Art Center. Chloe Waddington, a director at Timothy Taylor, has been made a partner in New York.
