This marked the beginning of the Solidarity movement, which helped end the Communism government. Today, that movement is closely aligned with Poland’s intolerant nationalist governing party, Law and Justice, which is against gay men, lesbians, and anyone else it views as insufficiently respectful of the Polish nation and its traditional values.
