🩴 Speaking of comebacks (and blisters) — jelly sandals are stepping back into the spotlight. Same with flats that look like they belong to an American Girl doll. Real American girls, wear at your own risk.
😬 Adding this to our list of unforeseen things to worry about: Unlicensed “veneer techs” taking a scalpel (and we don’t know what else) to people’s smiles.
👫 Following the announcement that Travis Kelce is joining the Ryan Murphy TV universe, the internet couldn’t help but wonder: Is he a “nepo boyfriend”?
You’d be forgiven for thinking Kim Kardashian’s random cardigan was the most noteworthy element of her Met Gala look — after all, the sweater launched 1,000 memes, headlines, and conspiracy theories. The real talker, though, is what people noticed once they (eventually) got past the perplexing knitwear choice: her “almost nonexistent” waist. Kardashian’s corset was so extreme, many questioned where her internal organs were hiding, let alone if she could breathe (for the record, she could, but it was “an art form”). Of course, this is on brand for Kardashian, whose Met Gala looks repeatedly spark weeks of online discourse — and accusations of promoting unrealistic body standards. Remember two years ago, when she gushed about the crash diet that allowed her to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress? Or when she took “corset breathing lessons” in 2019 to wear a dress so restrictive she later said she’d “never felt pain like that in my life”?
While Kardashian’s who-needs-ribs look was by the far the most startling, there was so much body sculpting and waist cinching on the red carpet that one headline declared: “The Rib-Crunching Corset Was The True ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Reawoken At The 2024 Met Gala.” You saw it on Tyla, Taylor Russell, Gigi Hadid, Donatella Versace, and too many others to name. The only trend nearly as popular was fabric so see through and barely there that it “seemed primarily designed to show off gym-toned physiques.” Combined, it’s another — frankly depressing — marker of the cultural backslide to early-aughts body norms in the age of Ozempic. Of all the late ‘90s and early ‘00s things we wanted to come back (see: denim-on-denim and vests-as-shirts), this isn’t it.
You know who’s already having a good month? Nikki Glaser, that’s who. Not only did the comedian steal the show with her pitch-perfect zingers during Netflix’s Tom Brady roast (“You have seven rings. Well, eight now that Gisele gave hers back”) but her new HBO comedy special, “Someday You’ll Die,” dropped yesterday. In it, the 39-year-old goes deep, discussing everything from egg freezing to facing her own mortality with equal parts honesty and hilarity. Glaser continues to prove she’s one to watch — and, at the very least, deserving of a dressing room that actually has her name on it.
Even if the last beauty pageant you watched was “Miss Congeniality,” you’ve probably heard that the Miss USA Organization had…a week. For the unfamiliar, on Monday, Miss USA Noelia Voigt — who made history as the first Venezuelan-American to win the competition — announced in an Instagram post that she’d be giving up her title, citing the importance of “making decisions that feel best for you and your mental health.” The sudden resignation was curious on its own, but it became even more curious two days later, when Miss Teen USA UmaSofia Srivastava announced in a similarly-formatted Instagram post that she’d also be giving up her title, stating that her “personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organization.”
What do Birkins and this Uniqlo crossbody bag have in common? If you answered “status appeal,” you’d be correct. (If you answered “nothing,” also correct.) Regardless, we can confirm the bag you’ve been seeing everywhere is not only worth the hype, but is just as functional and easy to wear as most things from Uniqlo. It’s made with a sturdy yet lightweight nylon fabric, so you don’t have to worry about rips, scratches, and stains — you could give it to your toddler for the day, and it’d come out unscathed…which is saying a lot. Plus, it has a MAGICAL amount of room inside. You can fit a small water bottle, wipes, your phone, and at least five “Peppa Pig” figurines in this thing. But best of all? It costs under $20, and Uniqlo just came out with a crochet version for summer.
