TikTok Shop
The Story
One of TikTok’s newest features is putting some users in a pickle.
Dill, err, fill me in.
ICYMI, TikTok Shop, which has been rolling out across the US, lets approved retailers sell products directly on the app. It’s also cracked open an opportunity for influencers, who can promote items and earn a cut of each purchase — like the viral pickle sweatshirt. On the app, videos with #picklesweatshirt have already racked up a jarring 154 million views. Not to mention, the brine-based gear has already brought in over a million dollars in sales. The sweatshirt is one of many items helping TikTok move toward its goal: Selling up to $20 billion in products globally this year. And taking on e-commerce powerhouses like Amazon. However, the app’s approach is leaving some with a sour taste.
Sounds juicy.
Indeed. For starters, some users have accused TikTok’s algorithm of boosting videos that sell products — which could explain why the pickle sweatshirt is suddenly everywhere. Down the road, TikTokers say that could lead to the app feeling like one big ad. Meanwhile, there have also been reports of videos featuring companies that are scamming users. And one nonprofit already flagged the sale of unregulated products, like weight loss pills and at-home lipo injections. Worth noting: TikTok has said weight management items are “strictly not allowed to be promoted or shared” and that it would remove any content violating its rules. Still, it hasn’t stopped some people from warning that the social media company may need to strengthen its moderation and vetting processes. In the meantime, it’s probably best to take a few precautions to shop smartly and safely.

TikTok’s algorithm has put it ahead of platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Now, TikTok’s hoping its success carries over into e-commerce — a move that some aren’t relishing.
Tired of scrolling job boards? Try Tinder. Or LinkedIn, which is having a moment, apparently. But watch out for screen apnea because yup, it could be happening right now. Plus, some companies are seeing the benefits of grandparent leave.
🧘 In wellness...
Sweet dreams are apparently made of “cricket feet.” Meanwhile, the health benefits of fish oil are proving to be, well, fishy. That’s as a growing number of brands may be cashing in on American anxiety. Oh and just in case you were tempted to kiss a tiny turtle, the CDC says ‘yeah, don’t.’
Here are today’s recs to help you live a smarter life…

Sunday Scaries, Who?
Here’s one tip for a better start to your week.
If you’re looking for some peace and quiet — and really, who isn’t? — give “house hushing” a warm welcome. The interior design trend has been making noise, because it eliminates your home’s visual racket (think: clashing colors or cluttered trinkets) and frees up both your space and mind. Sound good? Here’s a few ways to get started…
Create some space. Remove everything from the room. Yes, everything. Only bring back the items you love and consider giving away everything else. Keep in mind: If you’re the type that likes to hold onto everything, there’s always storage.
Focus on touch. The materials in your home are key to creating the right feeling. Embrace the great outdoors indoors with natural elements like stone and wood. Or, add some warmth with things made from wool, velvet, and other fuzzy fabrics.
Channel comfort colors. Is your accent wall doing its job a little too well? It may be time to swap it out for a calmer tone. Blues and greens are usually a safe bet, according to experts. Or, you can look for hushed hue colors, which many paint brands offer.
Cut down on actual noise. Looking for a new dryer, blender, even breast pump? Before you buy, check out Quiet Mark, a database that ranks certain items in terms of noise level.
