EDITOR’S NOTE

Happy Sunday. We may have a few more weeks of “official” summer, but to quote Richard Gilmore, “I am in autumn.” So is Cardi B, apparently, who’s already debuting “wintry” makeup. And Starbucks (obviously), which rolled out its new fall menu with so many adjectives, ingredients, and fall flavors, I’m overwhelmed. Also doing too much? The Halloween collection from Bath & Body Works (do I really need to smell like a Spooky Moontini?) and the perplexing fall trend of…corseted hoodies. Though, they do look Halloween-costume adjacent…

Deeply important information

⚽ Apparently we’re all supposed to be dressing like soccer moms this fall. New Balances optional but encouraged.

👖 Grab your Bedazzlers, millennials: The ‘00s studs resurgence has arrived.

✂️ Instead of therapy, some people are opting for “Reiki haircuts.” Which, if we're being honest, sounds just as perplexing as the “hair Botox” trend.

⚰️ From polka dotted urns to pastel-colored coffins, meet the modern mortuaries trying to put the “fun in funerals.”

I can't look away.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez

After months of speculation — and one deeply questionable “faux-hawk” — Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have called it quits. And while Lopez officially filing for divorce this week (on their second anniversary, no less) comes as a surprise to, well, absolutely no one (the lack of prenup is a different story), we can’t help but feel…bummed. After all, this was the couple that famously broke off their first engagement only to reunite nearly two decades later (Nicholas Sparks could never). Then, following a Las Vegas elopement and a second wedding ceremony in Georgia, Lopez made an entire documentary titled The Greatest Love Story Never Told. Was it a little cringe? Sure. But there was something about the type-A multi-hyphenate and disheveled Dunkin’ Donuts loyalist that seemed to work.

Or so we thought. Because no matter how much we were rooting for the couple, it was impossible to ignore the mounting signs of trouble (see: this extensive timeline), which started in May when tabloids claimed Affleck had moved out of their shared home. By the end of the month, Lopez had canceled her This Is Me…Live tour. And while Affleck stayed in Los Angeles, Lopez headed to the Hamptons for a Single Girl Summer, where she lived her best Nancy Meyers-core life (highlights include: a Bridgerton-themed birthday party, beachy bike rides wearing painted overalls, and posting extremely unbothered-looking selfies on Instagram). Still, there were breadcrumbs of hope (Lopez was photographed hanging out with Affleck’s kids and reportedly “stopped by” his birthday celebration the other week), but apparently, not enough to make the relationship last. So RIP Bennifer. We look forward to your reunion in — *checks calendar* — 20 years.

Need something to watch
Blink Twice movie still

Zoë Kravitz — aka the Ultimate Cool Girl — is known for her edgy fashion choices and bold film roles. And now, the actress is taking on a new kind of risk: behind the camera. Not only does Blink Twice mark Kravitz’s directorial debut, but the “post-#MeToo feminist party-girl nightmare thriller” also happens to be a collaboration with her fiancé, Channing Tatum (the two, who fell in love while filming, say art is their “love language”). Blink Twice follows Frida (played by rising star Naomie Ackie), a waitress who gets a coveted invitation to the private island of famous tech billionaire, Slater King (Tatum). Upon her arrival at King’s luxurious resort, she joins a group of young women where they spend their days indulging in fancy cocktails, exquisite dinners, and psychedelic drugs. The vibes seem great — until things start getting increasingly and horrifyingly weird. Also starring Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, and Alia Shawkat, Blink Twice is a sweat-inducing Midsommar meets Get Out fever dream.

Wait, they're dating??
Paul Mescal and Gracie Abrams

It was barely three months ago when those pics of Paul Mescal and Natalie Portman seemingly dropped out of the sky, sending the internet into a frenzy. Now, the King of Short-Shorts has been spotted holding hands in London with indie-pop darling Gracie Abrams (clearly, Mescal has a thing for friends of Taylor Swift), which, we’d argue, is a perfectly normal thing to do when you’re dating someone. However, we do have some questions when it comes to, uh, biting your significant other as Abrams appears to be doing in photos that have surfaced. Is Abrams’s affection part of the deeply Gen Z “cute aggression” TikTok trend? Or maybe she’s taking cues from our favorite toxic couple Tom and Shiv? Fingers crossed that Gracie and Paul have better luck than them.

Hefty Ultra Strong Cinnamon Pumpkin Spice trash bags

It’s only August and yet, we have already pumpkin-cinnamon-apple-spiced too close to the sun. We enter into evidence Exhibit A: Hefty’s Cinnamon Pumpkin Spice Ultra Strong trash bags. Though it’s unclear if they are also ultra-scented, the bags, which apparently sold out in 90 minutes last year, have made their seasonal return. And while we have no beef with the occasional pumpkin spice latte or even lighting a cozy pumpkin spice candle at the end of a long day, we have to ask: Must we also pumpkin spice-ify our garbage? And somehow, Hefty’s trash bags just barely scratch the surface when it comes to deeply chaotic, extremely unnecessary pumpkin spice-scented products you can buy. Turns out, you can add the fragrance or flavor to nearly every facet of your life, including deodorant, hummus, dog dental treats, body spray, chewing gum, and kitty litter, among a slew of other items. All of which, respectfully, belong in the (unscented) trash.
