Weekly Epidemiological Update

20 April 2023

Globally, over 2.8 million new cases and almost 18 000 deaths were reported in the last 28 days (20 March to 16 April 2023), a decrease of 27% and 32%, respectively, compared to the previous 28 days (20 February to 19 March 2023). Contrary to the overall trend, significant increases in reported cases and deaths were seen in some WHO regions and countries. As of 16 April 2023, over 763 million confirmed cases and over 6.9 million deaths have been reported globally.

Donors making a difference: immunization

With 25 million children having missed out on vaccination in 2021, WHO’s contributors are supporting the “Big Catch-Up” that aims to get countries back on track with vaccinations after the disruptions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters and armed conflicts. Read more about some of the campaigns and work that WHO is doing in the context of World Immunization Week (24-30 April).

Monthly Operational Update

WHO's Health Emergency Appeal 2023

WHO needs US$ 2.54 billion to provide help and respond to the urgent needs of the most vulnerable amongst a record 339 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Many are at risk of serious health threats, including disease outbreaks, nutritional crises, and lack of access to essential medical services, The funds will enable WHO to respond to 54 ongoing emergencies, 11 of which are Grade 3.
