Working in hot temperatures

With temperatures increasing across much of the country, employers must ensure workers are protected during hot weather.

There's no law for maximum working temperature, or when it's too hot to work, because every workplace is different.

HSE's website has a practical step guide on temperature in the workplace.

This includes guidance on:

  • what the law says
  • managing workplace temperature
  • preventing heat stress
  • protecting those working outdoors

We also provide a workplace temperature checklist to help you carry out a basic risk assessment.

View the full range of guidance by visiting HSE's temperature webpages.

Site supervisor fined after exposing school pupils to asbestos

A construction site supervisor has been fined after he exposed primary school pupils and staff to asbestos during renovation work.

The worker cut through an asbestos insulating board using a circular saw, resulting in asbestos fibres spreading throughout the school hall. Pupils and staff subsequently used the school hall for 2 days.

HSE's investigation found the supervisor had failed to follow asbestos awareness training, including clear instructions not to disturb the wall.

Read more in our press release: site supervisor fined after exposing school pupils to asbestos.

HSE currently runs 2 asbestos campaigns:

Make sure you are working safely with display screen equipment

All employers must protect workers from the health risks of working with display screen equipment (DSE).

Incorrect use of DSE, poorly designed workstations or work environments can lead to pain in the shoulders, neck, back, arms, wrists and hands, as well as fatigue and eye strain.

Our guidance on working safely with DSE covers a range of topics including:

  • workstations and assessments
  • work routine and breaks
  • eyesight testing

DSE training

HSE's course, delivered by our experienced ergonomists, provides you with essential knowledge of DSE risks and effective risk management strategies for all work environments.
