Home working guidance and resources

Employers have the same health and safety responsibilities for people working at home as for any other worker

Our home working guidance has details on straightforward actions to manage home workers’ health and safety.

This includes making sure your risk assessment covers home workers, which should consider:

  • stress and poor mental health
  • using equipment like computers and laptops safely
  • the working environment

There is also specific advice for home workers, which includes a video and practical tips on good posture when working with display screen equipment.

Construction firm fined as worker dies in fall

The company were fined £285,000 after a worker was fatally injured in a 10 metre fall while installing cladding

Another worker was injured in the incident – he sustained injuries to his spine and broken ribs.

The incident happened when they were working in a scissor lift, which was pushed over by a nearby crane. HSE's investigation into the fall found:

  • the incident could have been prevented if the firm had implemented better controls and put in place better communication between contractors
  • there was no lift supervisor present at the time of the incident

For more information read our press release on how the firm was fined after a worker lost their life and another was injured.

Other recent enforcement cases include:

  • Routine HSE inspection results in £150,000 fine for food manufacturer

  • Tyre firm fined after worker dragged into machine
