Automotive group fined as worker dies falling at Formula One facility

McLaren has been fined £650,000 after a man fell to his death carrying out an inspection at a hospitality unit which was undergoing maintenance.

The worker was carrying out the structural inspection of the Paddock Brand Centre used by its Formula One racing team, when he fell from one of the upper floors. He later died of his injuries.

HSE's investigation found that McLaren had failed to properly assess the risks and to put measures in place to prevent workers falling from height.

HSE safety alert issued: unsafe use of floor grating systems

HSE has issued a safety alert about the unsafe use of floor grating systems on offshore oil and gas platforms, vessels and wind generation installations.

Sections of polymer floor grating systems can become dislodged, with workers and others at risk of tripping on unsecured flooring or falling through the subsequent hole.

Investigations have revealed that fasteners used to secure the polymer grating flooring sections have not been installed or positioned as per the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) guidance, or in line with industry good practice.

Duty holders and employers should identify all areas of grating systems across installations and workplaces, and carry out a suitable and sufficient review to ensure they are safe to use. Safety critical areas such as escape routes should be prioritised.
