Refreshed asbestos guidance published

Asbestos is the greatest cause of work-related deaths in Great Britain.

Around 5,000 people die every year from asbestos-related diseases which typically take decades to develop and cannot be cured.

 

HSE’s asbestos pages on the website have been revised to:

  • simplify the navigation and help you easily find the information you need
  • remove outdated content and replace it with up-to-date, refreshed guidance

The new content includes videos for workers on asbestos safety to help them be aware of it and work safely.


Cider manufacturer fined £1.4 million following death of driver

The fine was issued after the worker was killed by the end of a security barrier while driving out of the firm’s site.

HSE's investigation found the manufacturing company had installed the barrier a month earlier and failed to:

  • carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment
  • implement a safe system of work to ensure the barrier could be secured safely when open and closed

HSE – market surveillance authority for workplace products

HSE is one of the UK's market surveillance authorities, which monitor and enforce legal requirements on the safety of most products used in the workplace, including any risks to health. 

HSE has a duty to notify the Secretary of State about unsafe or non-compliant products and of the measures taken and communicated by an economic operator.  

 

Products that present a serious or high risk to the health and safety of the user, and products that have been recalled, are published on GOV.UK.
