A pipeline transportation company were fined for safety breaches after workers were exposed to risk of serious injury and death while working on a leaking pipeline containing petrol under pressure. The workers were excavating a suspected pipeline leakin an area where a previous repair had taken place. The risks arising from the excavation work and exposure were significant. HSE's investigation found that the company had failed to properly identify and control the risks associated with carrying out a pipeline repair. Global Asbestos Awareness Week runs from 1 to 7 April. Despite being banned in 1999, figures show that 5,000 people a year still die from asbestos-related diseases in the UK. We know that asbestos remains in millions of homes and buildings today. HSEs Asbestos & You campaign is urging tradespeople to protect themselves from exposure to lethal asbestos fibres during their work. Those carrying out repairs or refurbishment work are at a higher risk of disturbing asbestos, especially when working in houses built before the year 2000.
