The Verge | It’s that time of year again. The days are long, the sun is shining, and Apple is getting ready to take the stage at its annual developer conference to unveil a look at the future of its iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS operating systems. That’s right, WWDC 2018 is here, and it all kicks off today at the San Jose Convention Center. The Verge | Google recently released Chrome 67 for desktop. This version of Chrome will allow password-free sign-ins for most websites, meaning you can avoid hunting through a password manager for specific credentials. Password-free sign-ins come from the Web Authentication standard, which was launched in March by the FIDO Alliance and the W3C. It lets you sign in to any virtually any online service through unique credentials that you don’t have to memorize, such as fingerprint readers, USB keys like YubiKeys, etc.
TechCrunch | Google announced that starting now, it is moving all of its G Suite users who follow its recommended schedule from its Hangouts video chat service to Hangouts Meet, the more enterprise-ready version of Hangouts. The move will likely take about a month or so. This means all newly created Calendar invites will now link to Meet video meetings, though Google stresses that all previously created meetings won’t be affected by this.
Forbes | Talos Intelligence released a detailed report on a new breed of malware (VPNFilter) that targets network routers directly, instead of the devices hooked up to them. It's concerning, because routers usually don't have malware intrusion countermeasures. The DOJ, in cooperation with the FBI, seized control of the domain the Sofacy Group was using for the botnet. This is good news for infected parties, since the malware won't be able to restablish itself after communication has been interrupted. But for that to happen, you need to reboot your routers. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security have both issued statements requesting as much.
