TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Glen Campbell
1936

COUNTRY MUSIC HISTORY

Glen Campbell’s Star-Studded Road – Thanks to Uncle Dick

Glen’s dad bought him his first guitar for $5. “He ordered it out of the Sears catalog when I was about 7 or 8,” Glen told Country Weekly in 1997. “Grandpa Campbell played guitar, Daddy played, and my older brothers played three or four chords — but I was the one who took it up, because I realized you could make easy money without having to do manual labor.”

By age 15, he was playing barn dances. “A year later, I went to work for my Uncle Dick,” he says. “Leaving high school wasn’t a tough decision — I wanted to play and sing and they weren’t teaching me that. I had mom and dad’s blessing, and I was making $80 to $100 a week with Uncle Dick’s band.

Read the rest of this story, as Glen Campbell recalls working with Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and others.
