Refer-and-follow privileges and beyond for low- and no-volume practitioners

With the rise of hospitalists, ambulatory surgery centers, and endoscopy suites, almost all hospitals find themselves confronting a growing number of low- and no-volume providers. At the same time, regulators have raised the bar regarding the need to link privileges with demonstrated current competence. The challenge is that low- and no-volume providers by definition do not provide enough evidence of their competence when caring for hospitalized patients.

A Florida family medicine physician will stop offering in-person care to her unvaccinated patients. Linda Marracinni, MD, says she will "no longer subject patients and staff to unnecessary risk."

New president of AAPA shares vision for physician assistant profession

The new president of the American Academy of PAs is bullish on the future of the physician assistant profession. Jennifer Orozco, MMS, PA-C, began her AAPA presidency on July 1. She practices in vascular surgery and serves as director of advanced practice providers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Orozco spoke recently with our sister publication HealthLeaders about a range of issues, including the agenda for her AAPA presidency, the role of PAs in care teams, and her vision for the future of the PA profession.
