| Up close Whale-watching charters often enjoy a show put on by whales breaching from the water as they play. But on Sunday, Laguna Beach residents were enjoying the action from their patios, the whales were so close. "Every time one of the whales jumped out of the water, you could hear people on the boats and along the hill gasping and cheering," said Lisa Yamasaki, who was feverishly taking photos from her deck, "and then a beat later, you felt and heard the slap as its body or tail slammed into the water." And it had already been a pretty good week for spotting whales and sea life, charter boat captains said. Read the story. |

Monster movement Rancho Palos Verdes city officials hosted a town hall for residents about the area on the peninsula where a landslide has been expanding and moving "at a very good clip." "What’s happening now is much larger than what the city can imagine," City Manager Ara Mihranian said while talking about the funding that is going to be needed to address all of the issues. At least one geologist is warning there is a risk "this thing could get bigger than it already is," though there is one bit of good news for the future. Read the story. |

| Trail access The Planning Commission, this week, set the hours for when the public can access the Bluff Top Trail through the Dana Point Headlands preserve. But the Center for Natural Lands Management, which owns and manages the preserve, said the city doesn’t have the right. It’s a battle over preservation and public access that has gone on for years.
