Protect your rights and wallet from coronavirus

By Stephanie Baxter,
Deputy personal finance editor

Coronavirus has infected just 51 Britons so far with no fatalities yet, but the deadly virus that originated from China in January is already starting to impact our lives and wallets.

Companies are preparing for lockdown if the virus spreads more rapidly, and some have already had to shut down due to confirmed cases. Travel plans are being disrupted and thousands of Britons have been stranded abroad.

It’s dented our investments and pension savings. Last week, the stock market had its biggest fall since the 2008 financial crisis, and despite a small recovery, we are not out of the woods yet.

Telegraph Money has looked at how the virus is impacting your money, and what your consumer rights are.

Read our complete guide on what to do if your flights have been cancelled, what your travel insurance will cover you for and what your rights are if you have to go into self-quarantine when abroad. We analyse the best insurers to cover you for coronavirus.

The Government’s contingency plans have warned that one in five British workers could end up taking sick leave at the same time if there's a major coronavirus outbreak. Check here to see what pay rights you would have. If you have to go into quarantine in Britain but do not test positive for coronavirus, you may not be entitled to sick pay.

Major gatherings will inevitably be cancelled if virus fears escalate, with London Book Fair the latest to be axed. Check out our guide to consumer rights for getting refunds on cancelled concerts, sports fixtures and festivals.

The Money team and our consumer champion Katie Morley are here to help. Email money@telegraph.co.uk with specific questions or contact kminvestigates@telegraph.co.uk if you want to have your case solved.

Here's what our readers said

In our comments section, Captain Sensible said of 'What does coronavirus mean for my travel plans, savings, investments and pension?': "When thinking about your pension and investments, this current mayhem shows anything can happen at any time. When you are getting close to needing your pension money (say within three to five years to retirement) it is best to diversify your portfolio to guard against the unpredictability of life. I'm 10 years from retirement but it is a wake-up call for later."
