Back to school is stressful for many kids and their families. But aside from worrying about class loads and friend groups, students at Cleveland Metropolitan School District are concerned about gun violence. Three students were killed by gunfire outside Cleveland high schools last year. “Going to school, you should not be thinking of your own mortality as often as you’re thinking about algebra,” said one 16-year-old class president. The Cleveland school district identified four “priority high schools” to focus on increasing school safety: John Adams, John F. Kennedy, Garret Morgan and John Marshall. It’s also working with the city and Greater Cleveland RTA to align bus schedules with dismissal times and allow students to stay in after-school programs until buses arrive. CMSD safety: Cleveland Metropolitan School District is working with city and police officials to plan safe routes for kids to take to school, increase security and police presence at or near schools, and put more surveillance cameras in place, reports Molly Walsh. Medical marijuana: The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program, created by the legislature in 2016, won’t be going anywhere if voters approve the adult-use recreational proposal Nov. 7, its backers say. Redistricting amendment: Maureen O’Connor, the former chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, pledged that if Ohio voters pass her plan to create a “citizen-led” redistricting commission, she won’t take part in subsequent redistricting efforts. Jeremy Pelzer reports O’Connor also rebutted criticism from her fellow Republicans that the redistricting overhaul plan, which she co-authored, would take power from elected officials and hand it to “unaccountable” non-elected officials. Recovery Foundation: Gov. Mike DeWine announced Monday that he appointed Alisha Nelson as the first executive director of the OneOhio Recovery Foundation, reports Laura Hancock. The organization is pooling together the opioid settlement money from across the state to spend for drug prevention, treatment and recovery. |

Farmland: While Ohio has lost more than 312,000 acres of agricultural land since 2001, there are still more than 10 million acres of farmland in the state, according to the American Farmland Trust. Hebrew Garden: The first official installment in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens after its 1925 creation was the Hebrew Cultural Garden in 1926, dedicated to the Jewish people of Cleveland and a focal point of visibility in the city. Sickle cell treatment: A promising medical trial at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital is investigating a possible sickle cell treatment using gene editing to modify a patient’s own blood-forming stem cells to lessen the effect of sickle cell disease and decrease pain. Julie Washington reports the Clinic was among the first of 23 trial locations in the United States and Canada to treat participants in this gene-editing study, along with University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Flows & Grows: Flows & Grows in Crocker Park is a yoga studio offering classes, workshops, meditation and sound healing. Life sentence: A 19-year-old Strongsville woman was sentenced to life in prison Monday for crashing her car at 100 mph into a building and killing her boyfriend and their friend. Cory Shaffer reports Mackenzie Shirilla was two days shy of her 18th birthday last July when she floored her Toyota Camry’s accelerator and slammed into a brick warehouse. She must spend the next 15 years in prison before she can ask the state parole board to release her. Sentencing: The great-grandson of former Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson will spend at least the next 18 years behind bars for killing a man last year, Molly Walsh reports. The former mayor sat with family members in the courtroom Monday afternoon as Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Shirley Strickland Saffold sentenced Donald Jackson Gates, 20, to life in prison for murder. His first chance at parole will be in 18 years. |

La Playa: Locals with a bit of imagination can channel Mexican Beach Vibes in Gordon Square thanks to the recently opened La Playa Fresh Seafood. Restaurant Week: Downtown Cleveland Restaurant Week is set to return to the heart of Cleveland in September. Courtney Gouseman: WEWS Channel 5 anchor Courtney Gousman is no longer with the station, reports Joey Morona. The television news personality made her last on-air appearance in late July. Last week, she confirmed to her followers on social media that she had been laid off “due to budgetary reasons and station restructuring.” One World: The 77th One World Day, a celebration of Cleveland’s diversity, will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday in Cleveland’s Cultural Gardens, reports Paris Wolfe. The free event includes activities at many of the 35 gardens along Martin Luther King Jr. and East boulevards. Riverfest: Collision Bend Brewing Company in The Flats is holding its first Riverfest from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. The day will be full of music featuring local bands and artists, food and drink specials, a beer garden and patio games, reports Paris Wolfe. RV Rocking: On this week’s episode of “Rocking the RV Life,” the Kinzbachs talk to their neighbor Jenn, who is currently recovering from an auto accident that totaled her car and injured her ankle.
